Kamala Harris for President?

I don’t think she’s ready to be president. Most of them weren’t though. She doesn’t look like a good presidential candidate though, the entirety of her relevant experience is going to be her time as vice president. So far she has not demonstrated political skill in her brief candidacy for president or her limited exposure as VP. Her best opportunities to becoming president will be outliving Joe Biden over the next 2 to 6 years, or somehow gaining the Democratic party nomination while a the Republicans nominate a terrible repulsive candidate. Both of those are real possibilities.

I mentioned in another thread that I’m not sure if I’m not paying attention, the media isn’t paying attention, or her people or Biden’s people haven’t been putting her out there.

I’m going to go completely out on a limb and speculate that Biden (his ego) is super sensitive to commentary that he is old and incapable, and think that putting Kamala out front for anything, no matter how small, will feed into that narrative. I imagine he is not wrong in that. Tucker Carlson probably has a screed pre-written for the first time Kamala is put out front, “OMG!!11!! Is Biden secretly dead? Did he have a stroke??11??”

Bumped.

I guess they aren’t fans.

It’s a smart (if loathsome) strategy. They can see that Biden is popular and they’re not going to have a recession to pin on him. So play up the indisputable fact that he’s old and more likely to die in the next five years than, say, Tim Scott, and make Kamala into the next Hillary.

Not a great strategy to hang onto for the Republicans who will have to deal with whoever Trump picks as his running mate. If for some reason Trump is not the candidate then nobody knows what’s going to happen, but no matter who is the candidate they’re highly likely to choose a women for their running mate.

Maybe, but she won’t be a scary biracial woke woman (with a weird name, to boot) like Kamala.

I think she’ll be scary enough in some other way.

If you mean “Whatever woman the GOP nominates as VP in 2024 will be scary to us as sensible, left-leaning Americans,” I agree with you.

If you mean that woman will be scary to GOP voters simply because she’s a woman … nah. They elect plenty of idiotic right-wing women and would be delighted to see one of them on the ticket.

Well yeah. But whatever Democrats think about Harris now she won’t seem scary compared to the Republican candidate.

You aren’t alone

I surprised nobody mentioned G Newsom as possible candidate?

For VP? I can’t see Biden dumping KH for another Northern white guy.

I meant for Prez

and he’s not Northern

Newsom will probably run in 2028. He’s not running now because Biden is popular with Democrats.

Newsom is a northerner compared to any politico from a state south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

The short answer is that, of course Harris will be a serious contender for the Democratic nomination in 2028. She’s not the only potential contender, and any number of Democratic senators and governors are also potential contenders, but she’s definitely on the list.

Right, and I prefer her to about half of the Dems possibles and 99% of any GOP possibles. Maybe 100%. Not my first choice, but a decent choice.

I’m more or less with @DrDeth in this, in that she’s as good for me as most of the short list of future (D) presidential hopefuls, better than some, worse than others (in terms of fit with me and my preferences that is). And certainly better than any of the names in running for the (R) nomination at this time [ if Kasich wasn’t an outcast RINO for being a reasonable being, he -might- be the 1 to 99 in DD’s example, especially if he could drag some of the (R) crazies back from the fast-track to fascism].

My only concern about her as a Presidential candidate is of course that the things that make her appeal to me in terms of getting away from our Old White Christian Male default assumption make her leper outcast unclean to a large number of voters, who will vote their prejudice. Sure, she wasn’t going to win over many if any of them to her side, but it seems likely (not certain of course) that it may drive additional turnout against her than someone with similar political POV but who don’t set off the bigots.

Same way I’d support my governor, Jared Polis as a decent (not perfect) and my preferred candidate in a future election, but worry that the election and hate vote would all be about his sexuality, not his qualifications and politics.
