I had seen plenty of poverty in my life, but I never really saw poverty till I went to Karachi. It literally took me three days or so to see beyond that; all I could think was “damn! this place is poor and filthy.”
On a personal level, I have nothing but good things to say about Pakistanis. Total strangers took me into their home and gave me food. Kids would see me in the street (I’m white and stick out, even when wearing a shalwar kammez) and say “hello” and it was clear that was probably the only English word they knew.
Islamabad and Rawalpindi are very different from Karachi. What I saw anyway was much cleaner and the people better off.
The Pakistani flag is mostly green (for Islam), with a white stripe symbolizing minority religions along the side by the flag pole. One of my Pakistani friends said this was because the minorities got the shaft. (get it, flag pole, shaft? haha)
I don’t know if it’s still this way, but when I was there, KFC’s slogan was “I’m a chicken genius!”
