Karma, karma, karma -- big game hunter trampled by elephants

But it wasnt karma at all. It would have been karma if he had been trying to poach an elephant. It is just an accident, leading to an unfortunate death.

yeah, I mean, I don’t particularly care that this “big game hunter” died, but maybe it’s not the best example of karma at work you could find. Illegal poachers and hunters are much bigger concerns that those going on a well regulated and run trophy hunting hunt.

Good point.

Of course I knew he was hunting antelope.

They can be endangered, too.

Learn about the yellow backed duiker here!.

Duikers are the most heavily hunted species across forested West and Central Africa.[12] It is not only a vital food source for people living close to its habitats [12] but a vital source of income as well.[10] The animal’s flighty, easy-to-scare nature causes the yellow-backed duiker to freeze up in torchlight which makes them very easy to hunt at night. When the animal is stunned by torchlight, hunters can almost walk right up to it.[10] This puts the yellow-backed duiker and its relatives at major risk for overhunting. Some scientists even project that by the year 2020 they may be at serious risk.[12] IUCN currently puts the yellow-backed duiker’s status at near threatened but if current trends continue, “the yellow-backed duiker’s distribution will become increasingly fragmented and its status will eventually become threatened.”[1]

Trophy hunting creates incentives for the locals to protect local species from aggressive poaching, since the animals become resources for the community.

I do find trophy hunting to be personally distasteful and sympathize with the forest elephants trying to protect their calf.

He was a “big game hunter”. Antelopes aren’t big game. Maybe that’s what he was hunting on this particular trip, but it’s not what he always hunts.

Duiker aren’t, but some antelope certainly are:

If it weighs over 50 lbs it’s Big game.

Not sure how much these antelope weigh.

Either way, he killed plenty of other big game.

Yellow backed duiker are over 100 lbs so if that’s the breakdown they are big game

Wiki:

The head-and-body length is 115 to 145 cm (45 to 57 in), with a short tail measuring 11 to 18 cm (4.3 to 7.1 in). The yellow-backed duiker weighs in at about 60–80 kg (130–180 lb), making it the largest of its genus. It has a large mouth, throat and jaw musculature.

In North America, white tailed deer are sometimes considered big game. Male deer typically weigh 150 to 300 pounds, which puts the duiker at the lower end of their range.

But you can only carry 100 pounds back to your wagon.

Yes, this is so true and heartbreaking. They are beautiful, intelligent animals and do not deserve to die for doing animal things.

Ironically, it seems like if they were going to pursue such a course of action, they would need a real big-game hunter: someone who understands and respects animals and their behaviour (and does not kill anything for sport), knows their way around elephant guns (and how to shoot live targets with them) and the bush and so on, and able to do the job humanely, without causing undue suffering to or endangering anyone.

Nature called, and this time it reversed the charge.

I don’t care if he wasn’t targeting elephants this particular trip. He has in the past and I’m not sorry in the least he was stomped into hunter goo. Fuck him.

Big-game hunters make some pretext of sport. When you’re serious about just getting it done, you use a helicopter.

Managing big game, especially carnivores is a complex issue. I had the opportunity to have a discussion with a professor at a major university who specialized in managing carnivores in Tanzania. The Masai are herders in primarily northern Tanzania and lose some of their herd to hyenas, elephants and lions. This professor worked with managing the carnivores to prevent poaching and teaching the Masai methods to protect their herds. He most certainly is interested in protecting the carnivores from extinction as the Masai herders would simply love to just get rid of them. Thus, the poaching. At one point he put the issue in perspective when he said, “how many lions are enough?”

Game management isn’t an either/or issue. I don’t condone trophy hunting.Much of it isn’t really hunting, it’s scheduled killing. Nature is not a perfect manager of its own habitat. Just don’t be quick to get incensed at every death of a wild animal. Some herds have to be culled in order to maintain a balance.

He wanted to know how you pick up peanuts thru that thang

How do they lose some of their herd to elephants?
