Katie Couric is a fucking moron.

Can’t you just imagine the theme song from “Mr. Ed” whenever you see this guy?

Well, at least he has nice teeth for an English guy.

I keed, I keed.

Sorry, but am I the only one who thinks that these women look like nearly-indistinguishable interchangable clones of each other? They look like the 15 year reunion of a Zeta Tau Alpha house.

Yes, my name is actually Katie. Kate is diminutive for Katherine/Kathleen as well. So is Kathy. What about Kate and Kathy make them any more “childish” than Katie?

I’m 22. I know women decades older than me who are called Katie. It does not suggest anything childish to me, any more than my friend Suzanah who chooses to go by Suzy, or my friend Jennifer who goes by Jenny. I know plenty of other people with “childish” nicknames as their given first name, and I never assumed there was anything childish about them.

You’re free to name your daughter Katie, Katherine, or Moon Unit if you want to do so. But I do find what you said about my name to be insulting, even though you weren’t making fun of it. Not overly–I’m not about to declare World War III over it, or Pit you, or anything. But it seems short-sighted to think that way.

I don’t know what my parents’ reasons were, by the way. They never explained it to me. I think they’re not sure why they named me that, other than the fact that they were surprised that I was female and didn’t have a name picked out.

(By the way, if Eleanor is your real name, it’s very pretty.)

Yes but they are attractive interchangeable clones of each other. With competent interchangeable hair stylists. And some blond highlights. So yes the 15 year reunion of Eye Etta Pie.

Hmm…well, each to his (or her) own, but I can’t really raise the flagpole for these. My preference is for something with a little more character–some freckles, a few scars, or an interesting tattoo (though I generally draw the line at facial piercings).

Very nice reply, Nocturne. I was considering one with a slightly different tone. I was a bit offended by eleanorigby’s post and my name isn’t even Katie!

I have a friend who is in her 50’s named Katie. Her given name is Kathleen but she has always been Katie. I have never thought it was inappropriate.

In my experience, people who preface their comments with “No offense, but…” or “Not to be critical, but…” or “Not being snarky…,” they usually do, and are. YMMV, obviously.

I thought you might be somewhat younger than I am. Yes, my name is Eleanor and thank you for the nice compliment. I never went by Ellie or even Ellen or El. I prefer formal names once puberty hits(my nick was Rigby or Roosevelt). My kids have never been called anything-y or ie. That’s my preference.

See how you feel when you’re 44 re your name. Since it IS your name, with no other option, I think you’ll find it fine and stick with it!

This may well be a generational thing–most of the women my age and older do NOT go by Debbie (they use Deborah and Deb for friends for example). The "y: and “ie” name endings were frowned upon by all who were struggling to make it into the corporate world. Times may well have changed on us all, but for me, that remains. In my world, Candy is not taken seriously, but Candace is. Same with Annie, Stephie, Mandy, Lori, Susie, Janey, Jenny, Nicky etc. It could be a class thing–I have no way of knowing (or caring). No offense was meant by me–it was simply an observation.
YMMV (and apparently does)

[QUOTE=EJsgirl In my experience, people who preface their comments with “No offense, but…” or “Not to be critical, but…” or “Not being snarky…,” they usually do, and are.[/QUOTE]

why not try direct communication? What is this? An attempt at a sideswipe?

Nope, just an observation. No offense.

I personally find The Person Under Discussion so annoying that I can’t even read this whole thread.

Nevertheless, could I take this opportunity to ask her respectfully to SHUT THE FUCKING HELL UP ALREADY?!?!?!?

Fer ass-fucking Christ-donkey’s sake, 90% of her interviews consist of her telling us all what SHE thinks.

Note to Katie:

NOBODY CARES WHAT YOU THINK, YOU STUPID SHIT!!!

I saw her interview a guy one time (don’t remember who, author/writer of hit TV show/something-culturally-significant, but if he had any sense, he wouldn’t come back), and the last question she asked him was something like, “We’ve got ten seconds. What thought would you leave with our viewers?”

His response: “Well, I–”

Katie: “Because, you know, I would think that you would say blahdeeblahblah-blahdeeblahblah-blahdeeblahblah, because if it were ME, I would say blahdeeblahblah-blahdeeblahblah-blahdeeblahblah.”

His response: “Well, b-”

Katie: “I’m sorry, that’s all the time we have. Thanks so much for taking the time to talk to us.”

His response: ???WTF???

Katie Couric needs smacked senseless in a totally non-violent (yet intellectually augmentational) way.

Really bad.

I mean, seriously: what kind of interviewer INTERRUPTS the person they are interviewing on a constant basis? God, she’s a moron.

I’ll probably be stuck with her during the opening ceremonies for the Olympics tonight. I’m thankful that Djibouti doesn’t send a team to the winter games.

I thought I was the only one; but you have excellent taste.

Well, to bump, apparently perky Katie is moving to CBS.

Yet another reason not to watch the news over there. Dan Rather===> Bob Schiefer===>Katie Couric. Yup, a logical progression if I ever saw one.

:frowning:
I guess I vwill not be watching Broadcast News no more.

I was always sorta meh on Rather. I generally only watched him during elections as he became really amusing as it got late. I don’t normally watch Face the Nation, but I like Schiefer and started watching the CBS news more often as a result, not that I often watch TV news. But with Couric behind the desk, no way.

Even with Lara Logan and Trish Regan on CBS, I will now start to watch another channel. What the hell are they thinking???

What a retarded thread.

It’s gotta be some kind of Gaudere’s Law where the person who starts the thread criticizing KC for being stupid (because she felt like singing “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” because SHE WAS ON A BALCONY OVER A PUBLIC SQUARE AND NOT ACTUALLY CONFUSING ROME WITH ARGENTINA) thinks there are asteroids in the Van Allen belt.

I’ve also noticed that there seems to actually be evidence in this thread that she is well educated and worldly, which has been countered by the “arguments”, “she’s stupid and annoying and shallow”, and a couple of anecdotes pulled up from her being on TV 5 days a week for 15 YEARS STRAIGHT. Jesus Christ.

She certainly ain’t Mike Wallace, but I’ve seen her get pretty tough in interviews. She’s well-prepared and nails people on specific inconsistencies and doesn’t let them off the hook because it’s just some sunny day morning show for housewives.

It’s NOT true that “nobody cares what you say, you stupid shit!” (as Dijon Warwick so eloquently put it) She couldn’t be more popular.

She has spearheaded “TV news’ most successful morning team in history since 1997, with Today riding an unprecedented 10-year ratings winning streak” which is also, “television’s most profitable news program”.

link.

Man, that’s a real funny way people have of showing that they don’t care what she has to say.

Yeah, most people know her from the parades, and the Olympics, and hosting some jerko who is demonstrating the latest in cleaning products. But, she does that well and the more newsy part of the Today Show is pretty solid. I like Bob Schieffer myself, but shit. . .she’s a step up from that moron Dan Rather.

If she’s available, CBS would be stupid NOT to hire her.

If anyone at CBS has half a brain, she won’t be behind a desk. She’ll do a leg show going in and out of every break.

actually I watch the Today show despite her. I don’t honestly recall the last hard hitting ask the tough question interview she gave. AFAIK, she’s known for the “so, after your daddy imploded in front of you, how did you all feel? you must have felt awful” I won’t miss her a bit.

my prediction is that the CBS news will have a spike (increase) in audience immediately after her arrival, which will then, in months, fall below their current ratings. I also predict that the Today show will show no appreciable long term difference w/o her, perhaps a slight increase.

Today isn’t a news show; it’s a chat show with a weather report. If you’re attempting to obtain actual news content from Today your understanding of world events is going to be limited to celerbrity gossip and time-filling human interest fluff. Couric hasn’t demonstrated anything like the credentials or background to lead a news program that is supposed to cover hard political and world news.

As an attractive talking head “newsreader” she’s sufficiently well-spoken but vastly overvalued, as I suspect CBS will discover.
