Next time wish for the thing to dissipate. You’re obviously very influential.
This is the message currently appearing on the WWL TV website:
ALL RESIDENTS ON THE EAST BANK OF ORLEANS AND JEFFERSON REMAINING IN THE METRO AREA ARE BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE AS EFFORTS TO SANDBAG THE LEVEE BREAK HAVE ENDED. THE PUMPS IN THAT AREA ARE EXPECTED TO FAIL SOON AND 9 FEET OF WATER IS EXPECTED IN THE ENTIRE EAST BANK. WITHIN THE NEXT 12-15 HOURS
Jeff Parish President. Residents will probably be allowed back in town in a week, with identification only, but only to get essentials and clothing. You will then be asked to leave and not come back for one month.
Jesus Christ–I don’t know what to say.
My BIL & SIL just called my MIL, she relayed to us.
They had been helping at Mercy Hospital (I think that was the name)
They are now med-evacing the patients out. They may get to go with them.
(We are hoping)
Scruloose, I’ve heard that Slidell (and Chalmette) have taken an especially hard hit. Sounds like they’re flooded very badly.
There are a lot of people here in my apartment complex that have come from New Orleans or the surrounding area. People are really in a panic here, not knowing what has happened to their homes, sure they’re underwater. I also know a few people who have friends that didn’t evacuate (luckily all my friends left), and now they can’t get in touch with them. There are also a lot of rumors going around. Some people have said there is 25 feet of water in St Bernard parish. I heard 9 ft of water in the French Quarter earlier today, which I figured was another rumor. There are so many stories going on around here, so many people that have lost their homes and don’t know what to expect. It’s very sad.
Eleusis, that video is insane! I’ve never seen hurricane damage like that!
Good luck to everyone.
Thanks for the report LoganDear. I’m sure he and his family had evacuated, but we won’t hear for awhile, I’m sure.
Man, I was in Miami for Andrew, and that was bad. But this is an unbelievable tragedy unfolding here. This is much, much worse than Andrew.
Oh great, now there’s word of shootings and carjackings near the Superdome. The looting is bad enough, but jeez.
The Governor of New Orleans was on Larry King on CNN. She was just barely choking back the tears.
I saw video of the causeways, its unbelievable the way they are broken up.
We got power back a few hours ago. It feels weird that desolation is happening less than an hour from here…
Wishes she already were finished with school and had her degrees.
From CNN on TV.
Jefferson Parish: To be evacuated, don’t expect to be back for a month.
Coast Guard is doing remarkable work.
17th street canal breach is lost, they cannot fill it. Water will rise much higher.
Superdome is being Evac’d Tulane is being Evac’d and Mercy Hospital is being evac’d (& hopefully my In-Laws)
Downtown Slidell is 15 feet underwater, but other parts may not be so bad; I’ve seen aerial shots showing some neighborhoods with only moderate flooding. It’s impossible to know without knowing how specific neighborhoods have fared, since it varies so much.
I don’t know about 25 feet of water in St. Bernard Parish, but there’s at least 10-12 feet in much of it. It could well be deeper in spots. There’s not really much good information coming out of that area right now.
It looks like the whole Eastbank will be 8-10 feet deep by tomorrow. It’s just mind-boggling.
This is awful. Everyone stay safe.
GT
Oh Crap!
Oh, shit.
Equipoise, thanks for the links. (I think)
Eleusis, glad the damage didn’t go as far north as I had feared.
Got a call from an acquaintance that’s delivering supplies to one of the turnaround stations near New Orleans. He says that the rescue workers flying over the city say that it’s easy to see numerous human bodies floating in the water.
Could the TV reporters be downplaying this to prevent increased panic? Or is this BS? Anybody heard anything similar?
From MSNBC:
I hope it’s BS, but I don’t think so. I was crying while watching CNN earlier today. Sheesh.
This is so horrible bad and awful beyond imagining and it seems most folks elsewhere don’t get it.
I have a sinking feeling this is going to get so much worse before it gets anything like better.
Not BS. They’ve been reporting that on FoxNews for the past 2 hours. They’re calling it a “Cesspool of bodies just floating in the streets”.
Oh jeeezzz. It’s just gonna get that bad isn’t it?
F@#k.
I dread the idea, but I think we are about to gain a new understanding of what cholera is.
