Katrina takes aim at the panhandle (maybe)

She’s out in the Gulf, and deciding where to go next. I’m starting to think that god doesn’t like Governor Bush and just has somewhat bad aim. Those of you nearby might want to move out of the target zone.

Shibb how’s it been where you are? Looks like you’re gettin’ dumped on pretty good. I’m watching Katrina right now because NOAA is predicting we’ll get heavy winds and rain Sunday night into Monday with flooding in low lying areas, which, essentially is everywhere around here. I may decide to close down for Monday as a precaution. Heh! Everytime I do that we don’t get the bad stuff. Course, the one time I decide not to, we’ll get it real bad. I’m a proactive kinda guy, so I’d rather err on the side of caution.

Oh, and it looks like there could be stuff forming out in the Atlantic again! They just keep a’ comin!

Hey Swampy, it’s actually not bad. They’re forecasting possible rain for this evening, and we’re on a Hurricane Watch, but right now, according to NOAA, we are just on the edge of the probability cone. This one’s not doing a good job of following the rules of Hurricane Predictability though (it’s moving southwest currently, which is just not done), so apparently she needs to return to Hurricane Finishing School.

Okay, now NOAA has her aimed at the Mississippi/Alabama state line, with deviations anywhere from midway through Louisianna and the Florida panhandle. Expected landfall is about 2 pm on Monday, which gives her all weekend to build up her strength. Everyone in the cone please pay attention and take proper precautions!

I still live near Ft. Walton.

Honestly this one came as a surprise since I thought it was quiet out there. I was even more surprised when I found out that it’s supposedly a major hurricane.

As usual, people are going nuts in my area. Can’t say I blame them.

Katrina isn’t anything to worry about… without The Waves :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like Katrina (and the waves too) are coming for us here in New Orleans, or at least close. The range as of the last newsbreak is between Houma Louisiana and Mobile Alabama.

As much as I’d like to take another vacation, I really can’t afford it.

Last year, we fled a couple of days early to Memphis, Tennessee for Ivan which did absolutely no damage in our area.

This year, we stayed for Cindy and took a direct hit…it wasn’t all that bad…they still can’t decide whether it was a tropical storm or a hurricane. But it was the most direct hit we’ve taken in my lifetime.

Then we fled to Chattanooga Tennessee for Hurricane Dennis which didn’t even come near us.

We learned last year for Hurricane Ivan that if they start talking about evacuation, to get out immediately. We left the night before the evacuation started and it was smooth sailing. The next day when the evacuation became mandatory, it was taking people 6 hours to go 20 miles because everybody evacuated at once.

Just curious: Any SoFla Dopers (i.e. Revtim et al) make it our from under OK from when Katrina came through yesterday? Here in East Boca, we got lots of downed limbs, small trees knocked over, mangled palm fronds, loose coconuts and the like. Nothing big. Didn’t even lose power, thank goodness! We lucked out, yet again. Some weren’t as fortunate …

When I hit the sack Thursday, Katrina was supposed to beeline across the state and plow me under. When I woke up Friday, it had take the big curve south and all we got was a wonderfully cool, overcast day with almost no rain.

Go figure.

This morning it looks like New Orleans is on the menu.

We got some minor squalls, nothing too bad. Looks like Orlando(ish) dodged this one.

Stay safe, everyone, and check in when you can.

checking in 30 miles northwest-ish of ivylass…just some clouds, some rain, a little breezier than normal.

cooler today, though.

Everybody’s gonna be walking on sunshine…liquid sunshine.

It’s nice where I’m at.

From what I’ve heard, New Orleans was said to be a disaster planners dream.

Given that it’s below sea level, I can see why,

And I love New Orleans too. :frowning:

We had some squalls here generated by the outer bands an hour or so ago. Just a lot of rain and a bit of wind, nothing to complain about.

I live just outside New Orleans- St. Tammany for those who know the landscape (flat)-and from what I can tell first Katrina will demolish New Orleans then the eye will pass directly over my house. One map I saw had Cat 3 winds on the northshore-35 miles inland (though around here that is only an approximate term). If this storm does what is expected, it will be the worst storm to hit here since Betsy ('65. mention Betsy to anyone living in N.O. in 1965 and it is equivelent to living through Pearl Harbor or a great earthquake. And Katrina could be worse). Take the wind damage from Ivan, spread that out over a city of 1.5 million, then flood the area and let the water stand for 2 months. I think I will take my computers with me. Not much is going to be left.

I meant nightmare. Bleagh.

But yea, I can imagine the havoc it’ll wreak on NO if it were to go directly there.

God, I hope New Orleans makes it through okay. :frowning:

We sometimes get the tail end of stuff up here, and there were some thunderstorms forecast for this evening, but so far only light rain. (I’m not holding my breath, though.)

Kytheria, you won’t feel any affects from this until mid week, earliest.

Heh. We haven’t got anything forecast for Tuesday or Wednesday, but then the weather system sucks around here (for example, Hurricane Hazel was supposed to be a light shower of “rain tonight”).

How are you holding up down there?
