Keeping Dog Doors For Their "Intended" Use

When I was young we had a milk chute, we used to let the cat use it as a “cat door,” to the outside world

For those who don’t know, a milk chute was popular in the 50s, what it is is an opening in the house. It has two door, the inside door is locked. Then there is a ledge and the outside door. The milkman opens up the outside door, puts the milk on the ledge, closes the door, and you can unlock the inside door and get the milk.

So we let the cat use it to go in and out the house so we wouldn’t have to bother letting her in and out. We just left the inside door and outside door open.

This worked well for a week, till the cat started bringing home things. Which may not sound so bad, except she wouldn’t kill them. Next thing you know there are birds flying in the house.

To make matters worse other cats, who didn’t like our cat, decided to pay us a visit, via the opening.

So my question is to dog/cat owners that use dog/cat doors, do you have these problems, if so how do you stop the animal from bringing things inside or inviting friends over.

We just locked the shoot, 'cause we couldn’t figure out how to stop it.

I have no idea where to find it, but some guy has, on his web site, a feature about using an old computer to recognize, and admit his cat when he wasn’t carrying anything. He set up a camera in an extended entrance. The site showed images from entrances denied. One was a 'possum, and two were his cat carrying prey.

It won’t help you with the birds, but apparently there’s these magnetic cat doors. Magnet on collar, magnet on door, and voila, only your cat can get in.

I think thisis the website you mean. Very cool!

I lived in a place with a cat door and had the same problem. There was the rabbit with entrails hanging out flopping around on the white sofa, the birds, and shrews. But the worst was the ones we didn’t find until way later. There was a bad smell in the basement and when we moved a bookcase we found a graveyard of suburban wildlife rotting behind it. I puked while I was cleaning it up, the stench was so bad.
