Keeping spam callers on the phone

Google “Lenny Phone Bot.”

Google “Kitboga”.

Yes we still have a landline because we’re older and prefer the superior audio quality however, that of course leads to spam calls. If we don’t recognize the caller number we don’t answer and if they they don’t leave a v/m we simply don’t call back. Used to toy with them but there’s so many now the fun is gone in that.

I get way more of these calls on my cell phone than my land line. I think it’s because, for years, my land line was Vonage and wasn’t listed anywhere, but now it’s back on my cable package. I’m looking forward to dropping cable for all streaming and moving the land line back to Vonage.

They think my name is Joseph. It’s not, but I don’t tell them that. I have a whole back story for Joseph.

It’s well documented and your step-son features prominently.

It’s been awhile since I answered one, but my favorite was a guy with a strong Indian/Pakistani accent asking about my laptop, but it sounded very close to the word “lapdog” with his accent.
“My what?”
“Your laptop”
“My lapdog?”
“No, your laptop.”
“I don’t have a lapdog!”
“No, not your lapdog, your laptop!”
“I don’t have a lapdog! I don’t have any dog! Why do you think I have a dog??!”
“No, your computer, not your lapdog!”
“But why do you think I even have a lapdog??!”
Repeated for awhile until he finally gave up and disconnected.

Unless you are being targeted for some reason, they almost certainly do not know your name and address. I got a call supposedly from my bank in the middle of the night supposedly about a charge on my debit card. I had the presence of mind to ask him to tell me my address. No, big secret. Bye mofo.
One Windows company guy hung up on me when I asked him to tell me my OS. And if your car warranty was really running out, they wouldn’t need to ask what kind of car you drive.
And it is unlikely that someone mad at you for wasting his time is going to waste more of his time calling, especially when you can block the number.
I don’t try to keep them on, I say stuff about their mothers. That really pisses them off.

Spammers don’t, some scammers do.

But if they have your landline, they can get address and name. For about $2 they can get your SSN, DoB, etc.

If it is a cell, not always.

However, I have given my warning. Security companies say just to hang up.

But if this makes you happy, that is fine. I am not one to stand in the way of happiness. Have fun, stay safe.

Like I said, if you are being targeted they might have it. And chances are they will use your name when they call to be more convincing. But when you get a “press 1 to learn about the warranty” scam, not likely. The last few times I did it no one even answered.
That’s on my cell. We have NoMoRobo on our landline, and the calls get hung up on after one ring, mostly.

I only have a cell and they never have my real name.
I give them fake names(Roger Hammerstein, Peter Mosse, Maiser Racham, etc) and they don’t even notice how ridiculous they are. I’ve had them accept non-existing addresses, credit card/debit cards, SSNs, fake bank accounts and more with no hesitation.
I doubt they could track down their own asshole let alone taking time to get revenge on someone who wasted their time.

ETA:If they could get all that info for $2, they wouldn’t bother scamming, they could steal directly.

No. They can’t.

I am sorry, now it is $4. Inflation.

That doesn’t mean they can flip through a phone book, point at any name, and get that person’s SSN and other info. That doesn’t mean anybody calling you from a call center can squint angrily and fill out a bank loan with your ID.

I trust you would have the same warm feeling toward a Mafia killer. Just working for a paycheck, you know.

These hired killers are out to steal your livelihood. I see only a difference in degree.

I don’t bother with them now, because I only get recorded offers. When they formerly called in person, I would drag it out for a while for fun, then ultimately tell them I understand they have sex with their sister. That seemed to offend them.

Indeed. There are myriad jobs out there which don’t involve fraud and exploitative tactics. Just because they cant be arsed to find a more legitimate line of work doesnt mean I am going to cut them any slack.

If they have my what now?

You have never even heard of a landline telephone? Your parents didn’t have one?

elfkin477 was making a humorous comment, joking that it has been so long since she/he had a landline that they practically don’t remember what one is.

You see, in many first world countries, many people are foregoing a landline and instead just using mobile phones. So, the idea that someone may still have a landline may be humorous to those people. It is exceedingly unlikely that anyone on this board has never heard of a landline which leads to the unexpected answer, and that kind of incongruous answer is often used in the pursuit of making jokes.

Please let me know if there are any other jokes you’d like explained.

Ah, sorry, I thought jokes were supposed to be funny. My bad. :stuck_out_tongue:
