You can steal one off of one of the mini-bosses in the final level.
Kefka. Sephiroth was the harder combat, no question. But Kefka was soooo much more entertaining for the entire story line, so I liked Kefka better as the villain.
Kefka, if only for his crazy laugh. I’ve always thought that Sephiroth was a bit boring. Especially after disc one. yawn
IHMO, Ultimecia, Kuja, Shuyin and Seymour remain as the only major FF antagonists that were sort of interesting. Garland, Zemus, Neo Exdeath, Kefka and Sephiroth all fall a bit short, I find.
I’d say Exdeath would defeat them both.
He’s a fucking tree, man!
As a character? Sephiroth. He was more interesting, he got more backstory than Kefka.
As a villain? Kefka. Best lines ever, and how can you not love a pyromaniac?
Mahaloth, I don’t remember much from that game other than Gilgamesh, Faris’ big unveiling on the ship, and the fact that the final boss was a tree. A tree. Oh well, better than Necron, the most totally random final boss ever.
And Zeromus needs some lovin’ too.
Allow me to describe Ultimecia’s entire role in FF8:
“I’m a sorceres from the future. I’m going to kill you all! ARGH!!”
I’m not sure what’s at all interesting about that.
Actually, she was - and did - going to stop time for everyone, not kill everyone.
While we’re being argumentative, I will have to disagree with Kuja as well. I barely remember FFIX because apart from the failed attempt at being ‘oldschool,’ it was a travesty, but was not Kuja’s main goal to eat a fruit of ultimate power from the giant tree of something-or-other?
In any case, he was the ultimate prissy fruitcake endboss in FF history IMO.
Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.
I just had this conversation. Kefka > Sephiroth; however, Ajora > Kefka. Kefka conquered the world for a year. Ajora had a religion which held the world captive for thousands of years.
Actually it was time kompression. The bitch spelled everything with a k, she’s got to be disqualified for that. Also, I think it was supposed to have killed everybody when she did it.
Amen brother. Ultimecia was lame too.
SWephiroth wasnt actually very interesting, backstory or no. He only really took off as a character after appearing in Kingdom Hearts 2, where he actually gets fleshed out a bit as a character. Those few moments make him much more cool.
Kefka isn’t actually as interesting at first glance, but the more you understaqnd just how much he’s done (Magitek power, using Terra) the more dangerous,. insane, and evil you realize he is. The best part is that while he’s not some super-deity killing machine, he’s still dangerous. He does make mistakes. He doesn’t let one mistake stop him, and he always has a backup plan. He doesn’t know everything, but he makes sure he knows enough. Thus, he is simultaneously more human and a more frightening villain.
Waaah-hoh-hoh-hoh!
Waaah-hoh-hoh-hoh!
Waaah-hoh-hoh-hoh!
It was the hips. The scene where he walks away and his hips sway just like a girl’s. I just lost all respect for him then, I’m sorry.
As for Kefka, that is still my all time favorite Final Fantasy. Sephiroth wasn’t the villain that was so cool, it was Cloud’s journey and Cloud’s path that was awesome.
Edited to add: But FF 9 has a great deal of charm for me if only because
It’s a happy ending. Totally, unambiguously. Which is rare amongst FF.
Thanks a lot. I’ve no where near finished that game but I’m far enough that “religion” and “thousands of years” tells me exactly which installment you’re talking about.
I’m propably going to totally fuck this up because it’s been ages since I played it, but there is a theory that makes it more interesting:
Rinoa is Ultimecia. In the end of the game Rinoa becomes a sorceress, and consequently immortal, or very long-lived. Which means she’ll outlive Squall. She’ll go / has gone insane because of this loss, and turn into an eeeeeevil sorceress who’ll go back in time to reclaim her Squallypoo. Her castle’s built at the exact same spot (the flower fields) where Squall said he’d be (in the intro, no less). Her final words “time… it will not wait… no matter… how hard you hold on” “it escapes you…” also seems to support this.
However, in general, most folks think this is thoroughly ridiculous. A google search will likely give more pro- and contra arguments.
Also: Kefka. Mwuhahohohoho.
Kefka is the better villain all the way. Insane, unpreditable, sadistic, and just totally a guy you either root for or love to hate. And of course he has better lines. Sephiroth’s just a puppet the whole way through FF7.
But I have to admit that Sephiroth (pre Advent Children) anyway is hotter. There’s just something about tragic bishonen that get to me, and of course Kefka’s got that whole clown fetish going. But personally I almost wish he were the protagonist instead of bland-ass Cloud. (Because, admit it, Sephiroth would have looked way better in a dress. :D)
Kuja is sort of a weird amalgam of both to the point that I sometimes joke that he’s Kefka and Sephiroth’s secret bastard lovechild. (They were drunk. Very, very drunk. :D)
Ajora? Totally owned the world until Our Protagonist and his Disgustingly Overpowered Party arrives on the scene (to the point that The Party gets erased from history afterwards), and looks totally hot in her bondage gear form, but otherwise a complete walkover. I could solo her with T.G. Cid.
BTW, can anyway spoil Advent Children for me?
Kefka.
“Hey Cloud, some guys made three clones of Sephiroth.”
“What? How?”
“Does it matter?”
“No, not really.”
“Good. Now, they’re all mad because they think you’ve stolen a piece of the ‘real Sephiroth’ when you got your infected by the tainted Lifestream.”
“…And?”
“And they’re coming after you. Oh, and when all three of them get together for some reason they turn into Sephiroth.”
“Wow, that makes no sense at all. Well, it gives me a good chance to have a swordfight while jumping half a mile into the air and show that my new sword is actually a big sword-shaped collection of other little swords all meshed together which I pull out one at a time and skewer him with.”
“That’s the spirit!” I’m sure someone can do it better than I can, but that’s what I got out of it.
While Brahesilver does a job of it, here’s some more. I rather liked the movie.
It’s Cloud’s last step to maturity and coming-of-age. He still feels terribly guilty about Aeris and hasn’t ever gotten past it, so he dwells in the past. In Advent Children, he ends up defeating Sephiroth again, and saving several children from a disease caused by the sickness of the planet. He also speaks to Aeris and realizes the only forgiveness that remains to be given is forgiving himself. He also sees Zack, who is with Aeris. Aeris has become sort of an Earth Mother, and Zack will accompany her and take care of her. At the end of the movie, when he has accomplished all this, we see a brief fleeting smile on Cloud’s face. Now for Cloud to smile was rare as it was, so that moment was the culmination of all that he (and you) had done and how far he had come.
And there was a lot of cool fighting, too.
