Alistair Sim’s Scrooge (known in the U.S. as A Christmas Carol) is from 1951. I have it on tape, and while Sim is perfect for the role, I do think the movie is overrated. I have no fear of black and white, but this is a story that cries out for color. My favorite is the musical Scrooge (1970) with Albert Finney. I hear the George C. Scott and the Michael Caine/Muppet versions are good too.
The 1951 Sim version has always been my favorite until the Patrick Stewart version equalled it. I also like the musical SCROOGE, and the Muppets version, and if the George C. Scott version had been more complete, I would certainly put it among my favorites (I know it lacks the other chained ghosts, I don’t recall if it has Ignorance and Want, or the pawn shop ghouls.)
