Also the US didn’t know that the USSR had 3 subs armed with nuke torpedos which would have wiped out all of our ships in the area - not just tactical nukes but the really loud type.

Although the Bikini tests proved that using nuclear weapons against ships at sea is not as big an advantage as it might seem.
