Good question. In the 1960 election, Nixon (not a pardigm of virtue, I’ll admit) at least accepted/acquieced to thinner margins, despite the advice of his handlers.
When we select a President as we did 2 Nov 2004, we realize that very few of us are in agreement with all the IDEAS of the person we choose.
When the people of the US have spoken, I believe a true American accepts the new Commander-in Chief…but continue to point out where he goes astray in your opinion…The French, Germans, Italians, Russians and Chinese just love to see the “I hate Bush” philosophy.
You not from around here, are you?
If by “accept”, you mean holding this president’s feet to fire for every mistep and opposing his immoral policies with every fiber of my being for the next 4 years, then I shall “accept”. If by “accept” you mean raising my voice against a president who is neither conservative nor liberal but merely selfish and greedy, then I shall “accept”. If by “accept” you mean using every tool at my command to persuade my fellow Americans that they have made a grievous error, and prevail upon them to make right this wrong in 2006 and 2008, then I shall “accept”. If by “accept” you mean work to create nation based on truth with opportunity for all instead of a nation who has been coerced by unreasoned fear and distrust of their fellow citizens, then I shall “accept”.
You see, I am just plum full of “acceptance”. But I shall never, ever acquiesce.
Um, no. We should be asking where you learned these numbers. Especially considering the time stamp of your post. Bush wins, deal with it.
I don’t think you’re hosing the math, but I do think you’re conflating two different totals. I believe the 100,000 spread you’re speaking of refers to Bush’s lead over Kerry in Ohio. The 120,000,000 votes is the total number of votes cast throughout the country. The popular vote spread is around 3 1/2 million in favor of Bush.
Sure, and that’s fine; I wasn’t much concerned in 2000 because the choice was between two “clean slates”, so to speak.
But I - and probably nearly everyone else like me - am against him for his record.
That’s what boggles my mind. His overall platform is so-so; in general, I disagree, but not rabidly. But add in his record, and I can’t understand why half of voters want him in power.
I can still “hate Bush” and be well within your definition. That’s a relief. I’d hate to please those sneaky non-American countries.
So empathetic, Starvers! I’m impressed.
Are you perchance holding a tumbler of Sandeman’s in your mittened hands up in the attic toasting your republic’s newly elected president?
You may have won this time, but one day the Democrats will rise up from the ashes like a Phoenix, and emerge victorous. If it takes four more years of Bush, this time unrestrained by any re-election concerns, to waken the American people up than so be it. I guess we’ll need to destroy the country in order to save it.
I am indeed, roger, and thank you. (I no longer have an attic, by the way. I think of it as a “garret” now. )
And if you were here you’d be holding a tumbler of your own, but only after a trip to Wal Mart to pick up darts and a dartboard in order to make you feel more at home. (But hey, you can’t throw 'em at me. Remember, the whole country voted him into office, not just me.)
Absolutely not. America without division is Ba’athist Iraq. I will do all I can to oppose, obstruct, defy and sabotage all that Bush and his robot army stands for.
Frankly, this election exposed a very ugly and vicious side of America. Homophobia won the day. It showed not only that this kind of unreasoning and activist bigotry exists in America but that it holds a majority. That bigotry must be fought and destroyed. This is not a time to unite, this is a time to cast aside our muskets and fight with fists and teeth.
If you thought it was ugly before…
Hell no. The pubs set the tone of debate in this country, thanks to characters from Richard Scaife to Newt Gingrich to Karl Rove. Democrats have been entirely too accomodating to this nonsense for entirely too long. This election, God willing, is beginning of the progressive people of this country regaining its footing, growing a set, and fighting again for what’s right.
Yes, we lost. But a year or so ago, could you have imagined that we’d be so close to a victory? We’re here to stay, baby–right in your face!
I worry more about the divided world. The only thing that may save America in the eyes of the rest of the world is that so many of us did support a change.
(Unlike Bush, I do care what everybody else thinks. And it scares the hell out of me that he and most of his supporters don’t.)
Another Hell, no here. The majority of our country has been wrong on many things throughout it’s short history. Time will tell. It may take a while for America to grow out of this.
Wasn’t this the battle cry of 2000?
No, the Dems will never accept a Republican. It’s been stated here on these boards long before the election.
McCain wouldn’t have been so bad.
I will accept him as my President. I will not try to get him kicked out of office on technicalities or trumped up charges just out of spite.
I will not accept his policies.
I thought seriously about leaving the country. I’m saddened and sickened by what is being done in my name. But now that it’s done I think differently. I went there and cast my ballot. This is my country, and I have a duty to it. Now it’s time to fight like hell. It’s time to take my country back.
I will fight to keep us from starting other wars.
I will fight to protect the rights of myself and my fellow citizens.
I will fight to protect my sovereignty over my body.
I will fight to protect the lives of soilders and civilians, both ours and foreign.
I will fight to bring American back into the fold of the civilized world.
I will fight to make sure America’s interest is it’s people- not it’s corporations.
We are about to enter the most divided time in American history. It will make the sixties look like a birthday party. And I hope that what people learn from this is they CANNOT let fear decide their votes. They CANNOT simply coast along. They MUST pay attention to the world around them. They MUST consider more than swagger when electing people.
This is a first for me.
No. I will not accept Bush.
If it is officially a garret, you are no longer allowed to use hot water. Are you sure you want to make this sacrifice for your art?
Zhere ees no sacrifice zat ees too great for my art, madam.
Plus, I 'ave zee hot plate, yes, no?
Depends. When do I get my “SOVIET RUSSIA” t-shirt and walking boots?
Although, I guess it won’t matter much when they install the brain-chips. Then the answer would be yes, I don’t think I’d have much of a choice.
I won’t accept Bush’s policies, because they’re fundamentally against what I believe in. If you really think I should forego my own principles so Europe doesn’t giggle behind our backs, then we’ve all lost on November 2nd.
Neither would Colin Powell.
