Kerry's Botched Joke

I believe Kerry is capable of astounding feats of political idiocy. Which explains why he couldn’t beat a weakened Bush in '04.

I fully believe that he’s capable of such feats, and in fact, I think he shows it in a later portion of his explanation of the botched joke, but I still don’t see any reason not to believe his joke was directed at the President, and not at the troops.

The White Houses attempt to distort my true statement is a remarkable testament to their abject failure making America safe.

This on the other hand, seems quite stupid to me. While I agree that they were trying to distort his statement, and I even agree that they have been abject failures in their attempts to make America safe, I don’t see the correlation between the two that he seems to find.

I don’t know-- this is a tough one. It really doesn’t make much sense either way. Here’s how I would decide-- did he and/or the audience laugh when it was said? If yes, then I think he was talking about the president. If not, I think he might very well have been talking, not about the troops per se, but about someone who might have to end up in the military, and thus in Iraq.

Oh bullshit yourself. Only a terrified partisan could convince themselves Kerry would insult the troops. It makes you feel better about the impending wupping, but it has nothing to do with what Kerry said. I’ve heard the comment in context, and it came right in the middle of a bunch of disparaging remarks about the President. The troops were never even mentioned.

True, but the TV news media give a higher amount of airtime to the “nutjobs”. They mostly appear to be young, and a lot of them are shown in stories involving anti-war demonstrations arranged on campuses (campii?), or by students… (I don’t claim bias here. These news stories are more dramatic than the “adopt-a-kitten” segment, so they get more air time.)

Being given airtime is very different if it’s a wide shot of a protest and a one-on-one interview. I don’t think you could honestly say that the majority of people actually interviewed on the TV news media say “the troops currently in Iraq should quit rather than take part in this war”.

Er, I think that was John’s point. Black people can call each other nigger while a white guy would probably get called on it. And soldiers (like you) can call other soldiers stupid without being called on it.

For another example, if I were to say British people are all thick, it could easily be taken as a joke. But if I were to say all American people were thick, it would be a lot easier for someone to call me a bigot.

No, not anymore. It’s been a very long time since either of you was in the military, and besides, Kerry was an officer, not an enlisted guy.

BTW, lest the intent of that last post is unclear, I do think you’re very intelligent. I just don’t believe you can’t see the insult.

Anyway, I think it more likely that he was aiming it at the president, and not at the troops. Once I get to see a video clip, in context, I think I’ll be able to say for sure which I think it was.
