Kevin Smith on Ebert & Roeper: Sorry, Roger

Did anyone else see Kevin Smith on Ebert and Roeper? First of all, I’ve never seen Grope so loose*. Secondly, is it wrong to like that arrangement better than the previous one with Ebert? The man that I have adored for years? The man that published my article about Panic Room?

What can I say - that was one of the best movie review shows I’ve seen for years. I am rooting for that shit to continue. But I feel bad about it.

[sub]*Full disclosure: Kevin Smith’s wife was the Maid of Honor at my friend’s wedding - I know them both, plus I’m good friends witth Roeper, we knew each other from cattin’ around in Dolt’n as kids.[/sub]

Bueller?

There’s no real hope for that show or any possible future pairings as long as Idiot Roeper continues to occupy one of those seats.

Did you see it? Rich was more relaxed than I’ve ever seen him up there. He looks constipated with Ebert sitting next to him, but with Kevin Smith he was himself.

[sub]Thanks for chiming in to call my friend an idiot, though[/sub]

I don’t think Roeper is an idiot. He just seems uncomfortable sometimes with Ebert for some reason. It doesn’t seem to be dislike exactly, just that their personalities don’t really mesh. (Dooku, has RR ever told you how he gets along with Ebert off-camera?) I do notice that he’s not afraid to thoroughly eviscerate a movie that Ebert just got done praising to the heavens

I liked Smith’s appearance too. I thought he might have gone a little over the top comparing Ryan Gosling to Brando and DeNiro, though.

I would like to see it. Do you know if there will be any repeats of the show or if Kevin Smith will be on again?

Jim

Sorry Dooku, I didn’t notice the part where you are a friend of his. I’m sure in real life, he’s a nice person, good husband/father/partner/buddy/etc.

But his being more “relaxed” with a new TV partner doesn’t change the fact that there are tens of thousands of people in this country who know more about film and have more right to call themselves a critic than he does. Having an opinion isn’t enough. Being able to articulate a position, defend an argument, and provide some cinematic insight that shows a deft understanding of the medium are minimal requirements, and I have never seen RR demonstrate an iota of this ability.

Fair enough, ArchiveGuy. It’s hard for me to view his opinions objectively of course, but I can see where you’re coming from. He definitely needs to project more of an air of understanding the medium - I hope that will come across more once Roger isn’t looming.

(I’m the one that got him How To Murder Your Wife on DVD - one of my favorites - I loved the shout-out he gave to that one on the show).
