Kevin Spacey comes out in response to accusation of sexual harassment of 14-year old boy

He was also pardoned by the Governor of Ohio (the crime was committed in Cleveland), FWIW. Not so with Polanski and California officialdom.

Nobody is having rocks thrown at them. People are deciding who they wish to associate with. A lot of people are deciding they do not wish to associate with criminals.

I seem to have read quite a bit about this a couple years ago. I’m not surprised at these current allegations.

Yes, when can we go back to the good 'ol days where people just said ‘rapists gonna rape’ and swept it under the rug?

Not before and unless mixing an afternoon martini at the office becomes perfectly acceptable again.

Do you really think that many people make up false stories of sexual abuse? What evidence do you have of that?

Two things:

Spacey went to ridiculous lengths to deny his gay behaviour long after public attitudes warranted. The one that comes to mind was assaulting (not sexually in his telling) a young man in a park in London during his Old Vic tenure. The park was known as a hook-up spot for gay men. Spacey claimed he was walking his dog at 2 a.m. when the fellow passed him. He shortly noticed his watch was missing and assumed the young man had stolen it. He later found it as was terribly embarrassed by the whole misunderstanding.

Secondly, he’s been known to mentor young actors, including a scholarship to one to drama school. Now I can’t think about that without stomach-churning.

Per Wiki, the FBI reports that 8% of accusations for forcible rape are determined to be false.

Best user name/post combination ever.

I never tried to quantify it. I don’t know if I would put it at 8%. But after 5 years as a SVU detective, yeah it happens.

Spacey is your basic Hollywood (or any other type) liberal who thinks he has a right to assault 14 year olds and say he is the victim. Because other librals will almst always cover up for them.

Do you really think sexual predators vote as a bloc?

All the liberal posters I’ve seen have condemned Spacey. The only poster I’ve seen that hasn’t condemned him is conservative (aldiboronti, in this thread: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=839055&page=3).

It must be mad to live in a world where everything is about politics and them damn liberals/conservatives depending on what bubble you live in.

This is about power, influence and lots of other things that aren’t easy to fix or dismiss as the other political side’s issue. That’s what Weinstein, Cosby, O’Reilly, Ailes and Spacey have in common not their voting record.

People have and will protect people like this but it’s out of self interest not out of political beliefs. That the demonisation of all sides has come this far is depressing to say the least because sexual assault and the treatment of women is a huge problem and your kind of thinking will never solve anything ever.

I know. Conservatives never assault people and then become President.

No one, adult, child, or teen, will experience a sexual assault the same way. A knowledgeable fourteen year old with stable, supportive parents, and good self esteem and mental health might have little or no trauma when a creepy adult feels them up. But if a teen is naive, or has depression or anxiety, no support system, or maybe starts questioning if their own sexuality caused the adult to act, a “minor sexual assault” could cause some real trauma.

Just because you were able to go on unaffected by an assault doesn’t mean that everyone can.

[Moderating]

Politics is not relevant to this thread. This is an official moderator instruction to keep any political hijacks out. If you want to discuss questions like which political party is more likely to commit sexual assault, then Great Debates or the Pit is the place for that.

Well, this would appear to be a pretty horrifying story:

It is horrifying but it’s also anonymous and should be given as much weight as any anonymous assertion carries, which is zero.
