IIRC, there are also laws that prevent them from releasing names of sexual assault victims to the public. (Dopers can correct me if I’m wrong)
Yeah, it seems to me quite possible he doesn’t specifically remember it, but knows it wouldn’t have been out of character. I say in part based on more cases already having been alleged since, although in fairness the claims of sexual harassment on the ‘Cards’ set didn’t involve minors AFAIK.
Again I don’t have a big problem with the apology, without being able to look inside Spacey’s mind. I don’t know if he actually remembers it (how could anyone else know?). And he’s free to release his coming out statement at the same time (though if he thought that would soften the PR blow he thought wrong). But as always apologies don’t necessarily fix things.
Doesn’t it seem that, no matter the extent of Kevin Spacey’s harassment of young men, the sheer number of accusations, the media has fixated on this one gay man? There are no doubt dozens of others doing the same thing, producers, directors, and actors, and no doubt they have enough money to have paid off their victims, handsomely. We aren’t hearing about them much. Just Kevin Spacey. it’s like the media is saying, ‘ok, we can’t NOT acknowledge gay predators in Hollywood, but it’s a sordid, hidden thing the public doesn’t want to hear about. We do have Kevin Spacey here, plenty of talk about HIM, so let’s run with that - him being a sort of symbol of gay predators.’ I have no doubt there is plenty of gay predation, with all boy pool parties and yachting cuties, like Playboy did with women for decades. The public doesn’t hear about it, it’s kept on the down-low. But we are hearing ALL ABOUT Kevin Spacey’s bad behavior, he’s not the only one.
You seriously feel the attention has been focused on just Kevin Spacey ??
Here’s a list of 13 Hollywood “power players” recently accused of sexual assault or harassment.
There’s also been considerable attention on media figures including Bill O’Reilly (Fox), Roy Price (Amazon), Michael Oreskes (NPR), Lockhart Steele (Vox), Davod Corn (Mother Jones), Mark Halperin (NBC), Roger Ailes (Fox), Matt Taibbi (Rolling Stone).
Won’t this cause very serious breach of contract penalties?
salinqmind was speaking specifically about Spacey being the only gay man who was getting attention.
Probably not or they wouldn’t do it. There is likely some sort of section that deals with notoriety from news such as this.
Feeling left out, Steven Seagal? Don’t worry, buddy, Julianna Margulies hasn’t forgotten you.
I see.
Maybe gay men are less likely to engage in this sort of behavior?
I highly doubt that gay men are significantly less creepy than straight men. There are way fewer gay men out there though.
Morality clauses are standard. They don’t want to keep paying you after you get drunk and hit a van full of nuns.
Leaving the gay part out there are plenty of reasons why this would get a lot of press. A 14 year old. Multiple serious accusations. An Oscar winner. Hints of many more incidents over years. James Toback’s actions seem as bad or worse but no one could pick him out of a line up (So to speak). Apparently I’m more tuned into Hollywood than I thought. I figured Harvey Weinstein was a household name. Many people had no idea who he was before the story broke. Kevin Spacey is a star.
There certainly aren’t any areas or professions that might attract a higher percentage.
Good point but still in the minority.
Fashion designers?
I just saw another outraged YouTube video talking about how he tried to deflect the scandal by announcing he was gay at the same time. I still don’t get this. How does he acknowledge the allegation that he came on to/assaulted a young male without conceding that he’s gay? This was a damned if you do/damned if you don’t situation.
On a side note, I think it’s going to be difficult for anybody to watch a movie or TV show featuring Kevin Spacey ever again. I say this with some regret because Spacey’s been in a lot my favorite movies from the last 25 years like Glengarry Glen Ross, Seven, The Usual Suspects, and LA Confidential. I wouldn’t be surprised if these films and the others he’s been in disappear into the media equivalent of black hole for at least a generation.
Do you mean that Netflix and Amazon Prime are going to hide them? I highly doubt that. Do you mean that network TV won’t show them anymore? Who the hell even watches movies that way anymore? He won’t be any new stuff any time soon but his classic stuff will live on.
I don’t know about that. His presence even in those movies might cause such a feeling of cold clamminess and nausea in viewers that they’ll be avoided.
In situations where the life of the actor runs counter to the character, I can see it being a problem but I genuinely don’t know what the impact is when the actor and character have scumminess in common. In most of his great roles, he played shitty people. The main reason someone would keep sexually assaulting others in the way Spacey did is because they enjoy power over others which fits in pretty well with Frank Underwood.
Looks like he even went for Richard Dreyfuss’ son while the elder was in the room: Kevin Spacey Accused of Groping Harry Dreyfuss When He Was 18 - Variety
When I was much younger, I used to like Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover novels. Even went to a con to see her speak once (as an awful man, I was unwelcome; fortunately I was with a female friend who liked the Sword & Sorceress series).
After all the awful revelations that came out about her – which I won’t detail; it can be googled easily – I never could bring myself to read any of her stuff again. Ended up throwing all her books into the trash.
I knew quite a few people who felt the same way. However, occasionally I’ve met a True Believer, particularly rabid fans of Mists of Avalon. I wouldn’t mind someone whose argument is that they can separate the author from the work, but inevitably these persons have to rabidly defend both the work and the awful author. It’s rather nauseating to hear impassioned defenses of pedophilia, so I end up marking down any person who admits to liking Bradley’s works as People To Avoid.
I expect I’ll be doing the same with Spacey.
