…thereof for years and have never…
Up.
I’m a big fan of Ergonomicity. I use a Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard. I use a Logitech Marble Mouse Tracball.
One of the things I find most deeply ANNOYING about my new TiBook is the keyboard. While it’s larger than some laptops, it’s still tough to work. I will find an ergonomic Mac keyboard, come hell or high water.
I keep the tabs on the Ergo keyboard up, I find the angle to be better for me. However- I can see the logic of what **Squish[/s] said. There was a computer desk I saw once that made SO MUCH SENSE to me. It kept the monitor in a square hole in the desk, dropped below eye level. That way, your head and neck were not lifted up at all, and your eyes were relaxed and dropped down slightly. It looked amazingly smart. In keeping with that, I can see how tilting the keyboard AWAY from you, down slightly, would actually work. In theory. In practice, I’ve tried and I cannot get it to be comfy.
One more thing about the TiBook. The Apple Store sold this great $ 29.00 device called a Podium Pad , by RoadTools. I got one the day I got my TiBook, and it’s simply brilliant. Light, strong, grippy. Get one if you use a laptop !!!
Cartooniverse
Cartooniverse, I’ve seen those desks you’re talking about. Never tried one so I don’t know they feel.
I touch-type also (learned on an Underwood manual typewriter), but having my wrists straight is so much more comfortable for me.
At work I keep the tabs down. At home I just plop the keyboard on my lap, so the tabs don’t come into play.

- I don’t quite understand how you people mean: the tabs can be either extended or retracted. If they’re extended, the top/far edge of the keyboard is raised higher than the bottom/near edge.
-
- Which is more likely to cause you to get carpal, because your wrists are bent more with the tabs extended. So down is better for you. Actually, tilted away is better for you.
- People with small or lazy hands often extend the tabs to help prevent accidently hitting the lower-row keys less. - DougC
Up. most definitely.
Count me in with the “up” votes here.
Please note the post by Doug C, above. Keeping the tabs extended (“UP”), as most of you seem to do, is bad, and if you type a lot, can increase your risk of carpal tunnel, which hurts like hell. (Look at your wrists as you type – they should be as straight as possible!)
Put them down! Better yet, get the good kind of keyboard, where the tab lifts the front of the keyboard, allowing even better wrist positioning.
Believe me, it takes a very short while to get used to. So do it now! Don’t wait!
Up, feels weird when they are tucked in.
Down. Started when I was pregnant and got Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. My wrists are happier for it, even if it does make me a pinko commie.
everytime I read the title to this thread, I picture some rapper up on stage accepting his grammy:
yo, I wanna give props to my keyboard.
Up
Holy Crap!
I’ve never even thought about this - mine have always been down!
I just put them up and…it feels soooooo gooooooooood!
