KFC grim and frostbitten

I can honestly say that I never thought I’d see any mainstream advertiser using kvlt black metal to sell anything. But as I seem to learn time and time again, there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in my philosophy. KFC has a commercial for their new chicken sandwich featuring the (fictional) black metal band Hellvetica. Clever band name, crap song, but a hilarious commercial.

Cool commercial.

What is kvlt?

Wow, I didn’t know the band’s name because I’d only ever seen the shortened version. That’s hilarious.

I can’t really tell from the youtube clip, though - the band’s name on the bass drum looks like a serif font (or maybe it’s just smearing) - i.e. not actually Helvetica.

Cult black metal (also known as true black metal) is a subgenre of black metal that’s meant to be similar to what was recorded by the very earliest bands, who were often working with a pretty tight budget. That means no keyboards or choirs or any of the other stuff that shows up in symphonic black metal. The word cult is often written as kvlt cause it looks more evil or something.

Darkthrone’s Transilvanian Hunger is one of the better true black metal songs out there. The thread title is a reference to Immortal’s Grim and Frostbitten Kingdoms.

Thanks.

I am no fan of heavy metal, but I might like that if it weren’t for the throat clearing vocals. Too corny.

Yeah, and I didn’t think I’d live to hear that evil 60s rock on lite FM stations, Tears for Fears while waiting at the pharmacy, and The Clash on classic rock stations.

What will the music of 2050 sound like?

The best part of that commercial for me is that they could have done the fire eater can’t handle the sandwich thing without going with the black metal bit, so that was purely and excellently gratuitious mainstream exposure to the least friendly musical genre of all time.

Can you imagine when the ad agency pitched this to the clients?

Maybe this will change your mind about that kind of vocals

Cookie monster metal

Try Dragonforce.

It’s not really changing my view of the vocals, but my word, that’s a fun video.
