Kickin' the cigs!

I haven’t seen anyone mention support groups. Studies have shown that people that attend these groups have a much higher success rate. In fac, if you read the instructions on the patch or gum you will note they say chances of quitting are better with a support group. Your doc or the local Heart Association or Lung Association should be able to hook you up with one.

puffington – I really can’t agree with you on the pot thing. It’s trading one addiction for another. It’s like saying you are going to kick cocaine by drinking. It’s a really bad idea. And I don’t know about you but alcohol and/or pot just make me want to smoke MORE. I kicked both of those things out the door before I even started on the stop smoking deal. I’m not saying that it won’t work for others but I don’t think it’s a good idea.

PUNdit – um, that’s what my link is. An on-line support group available twenty-four hours a day. I agree with you that there are also other groups that meet live: Smokers anonymous and the like.

Sorry Byz, I meant no disrespect to your post, but I have seen studies on quitting with a live support group vs. doing it alone. I haven’t seen studies on using an online support group. BTW there are numerous types, so if you are worried that it is going to be a “HI I’m Roy W. and I’m a smokaholic but I am following these 12 steps,” rest assured most are not that way.
You know, now that I think about it, I think for regular posters an online support group could be better… I wonder if I could get the feds to fund a study?

Byz, I think puffington’s method may have some merit. Certainly it’s not for everyone, but there is a crucial difference between marijuana and the other drugs listed(tobacco, alcohol, cocaine): it is not physically addictive. Also, he recommended it as a withdrawal-period drug, not a permanent substitute.

I can just see every ex-tobacco-addict going around smoking 20+ joints a day! Yeeehawwww!!! The world would be different, that’s for sure!

Well as far as substituting pot for cigs…wooooo…don’t you guys have to take drug tests for work? We have random drug testing every day…you never know when your number will come up…think I would definitely smoke cigs before pot…I need to work…

TennHippie – It has merit, I guess, I just don’t think it’s that good of an idea. Pot may not be physically addictive but it sure as hell is psychologically addictive. Still seems like trading one addiction for another… but hey, that’s just IMHO.

I made the call for me a while ago to stop smoking pot (for health reasons) and to stop drinking (too scary with so many alcoholics in my family) and I’ve just been putting off the smoking thing. I just happen to really WANT to stop this time and I have a lot of very good reasons for doing so.

I’m not trying to piss in anyone’s cereal just saying that I know this wouldn’t work for me.

PUNdit – no disrespect taken. Just wanted to point that out to people. Since I’m on-line a lot and travel is difficult in the valley I plan on using that when I can’t get out to a meeting. I’ve also heard from another friend that that 1-800-get truth or something like that can link you up with all kinds of info and groups. Anyone know the exact number on that? I’ve seen the ads like a million times but I can’t remember the friggen number!

Well, well, well. Week 1 is over and I survived. (It helped that I didn’t have to deal with work the first two days.) Actually, I’m feelilng pretty good. I even spent 5 hours driving today and didn’t miss them at all.

I think the worst of the physical withdrawal is over. Now I just have to keep on my toes for the psychological urges. Those have always been the ones that get me in the past.

Anyone else still going?

Hey Mr. KnowItAll-
The best paralell I can make about quitting smoking is breaking up with your first love! You’ll never stop thinking of her completely but as time goes by you’ll think of her less and less!

You wanna know something about me…ask me…not my friends…

I quit for 4 years, relapsed for 3 months and now have 5 years smoke free. Here is what I learned:

Smoking is not a habit. It is drug addiction. That is why you have withdrawls. That is why you crave nicotine if you haven’t somoked for a while. You become restless and unfocused until you bring your nicotine levels up.

A cigarette is a nicotine delivery system, just like a needle is a heroin delivery system.

Cigarettes are not your friend. They will kill you very slowly. Parts of your body will have to be removed to keep you alive. Some people smoke through the hole that was cut in their throat because the smoke is too diluted if they inhale through the mouth.

Cigarette companies have manipulated the levels of the various toxins to get you addicted faster. Since the toxins are passed to your red blood cells through your lungs, they reach every cell in your body.

Since you are posting this, you have stumbled onto the key for successful smoking cessation. Support! There is no patch, pill, shot, hypnotist, or magic wand that will make quitting easy. It is never easy. At some point you have to stop sticking them in your mouth and lighting them. Try nicotine anonymous, it’s free. Try the American Lung Association, try, try, try.

Keep talking about it. There is lots of help out there if you seek it out. And you know what? After 5 years of not smoking, not a day goes by when I don’t want a cigarette. Good Luck!!

John
