Kicking The Habit

There is a guy in our office that wants to quit smoking (so he says…I have my doubts) He is the only smoker in our building.

I told him I quit 15 years ago by dumping all the ash trays in a mayo jar and filled it with water. I kept it on my desk (you used to be able to smoke in the office back then) and whenever I wanted a ciggerette I would open the jar and take a good long whiff. EEEEeeew it was awful. It was enough to turn your stomach in a second. I never touched another ciggerette.

This guy (Chip) doesn’t want to try this. He also doesn’t want to have to go to a doctor and spend a ton of money on patches.

He is looking for some viable other ways. Any suggestions?

Soak all your cigs in lacquer thinner. Let dry. Ruins the taste, is extremely poisonous, and ciggies burn up real fast.

After doing this for a while, you lose track of why you were doing it and stop all together. Viola! No more habit!

Or, everytime you are about to smoke a ciggy, announce to everyone that you are going to “light up a fag.” What with the changing of idioms and all, this is sure to cause a lot of concern among the co-workers and, eventually, someone will stop you.

I quit by sheer will power. Cold turkey, too. If I can do it, I think almost anybody could.

Watching my mother choke to death on chunks of her own cancerous lungs worked pretty well for me.

And I still used the patches.

Isabelle, I recently quit smoking. I ordered the patches for free through the state (I am one of the last few who received them, since they have run out of money). It is an 8 week supply of Habitrol patches. I used them for two or three days, and then ran out of the house one morning in a frenzy and forgot to put the damn thing on. So I decided, since I made it through one day I wasnt about to put them back on (and I’ve smoked for almost 13 years). My POINT is, that I have an entire 8 week supply of patches(minus the two or three I used) sitting here. I don’t want to throw them out, because someone like your friend may want them. If he would use them, email me. I’d be glad to mail them to him (or you). If you pass on them, maybe someone else here would like to have them.
The supply has: 21mg 4 week supply of patches (minus the three I used); 14mg 2 week supply of patches; 7mg 2 week supply of patches; CD ROM and self help booklet; 3 or 4 plastic containers to dispose of the used patches, so kids cant get into them.

When I told my doctor that I want something for the depression and want to quit smoking at the same time, he prescribed me Wulbetrin (sp?) I helped me with the smoking part but none for depression.

He told me that it was mainly developed for depression but later it was found out by studies of the users of it that it helps them stop smoking as well.

When I’d want to smoke after taking the medicine, I’d feel very abhored by the smoke and it kinda won’t give me that smoking pleasure anymore so I won’t get the urges to smoke.

Well, you can tell him, “Everybody quits smoking … eventually.”

My husband tried quitting about four times before he succeeded. He credits his success to this book. He’s been smoke-free for almost two years now.
