anybody else heard the new radiohead songs yet? what do you think? any favorites? how are your hopes for the newest album?
i know that i really got into the bends supercore, and felt in my heart of hearts that they couldn’t do anything of that grandness ever again. and then when ok computer came out, i listened to it a few times and was hooked. but i still have a bit of worry that this new album won’t be quite so good.
any other radiohead dopers out there? i’d like to hear you weigh in, even if you have no idea what ‘kid a’ refers to.
big tent? i haven’t heard anything about a big tent. wow, this gets more interesting as time goes by.
Montfort- yeah, motion picture soundtrack is a beautiful song. those opening words “White wine and sleeping pills, help me get back to your arms”.
i have only heard about six or seven of the new ones. national anthem is GREAT, knives out is a bit racier and uptempo than the webcast version. geez, i can’t wait til they come to the states.
nodata audio has a few recordings of recent concerts with the new stuff. ‘how to disappear…’ is my favorite off of that site.
Big tent: Apparently, Radiohead is bringing their own venue on tour with them this fall. It is, as you can guess, a big tent. They’re basically setting it up in a field and using their own sound system, rather than rely upon local setups. Seems interesting, I’m curious if it’ll work or not.
Check out this site for updated info. from Radiohead. It’s a fan site, but they’re very accurate and informative. And, they have links to where you can get some great mp3 bootlegs of the recent tour. Look on this page for an awesome quality show from Berlin, as well as links to other neat mp3s to have.
I like Knives Out, too, but it’s not going to be on Kid A, alas. The tracklisting is:
[li]Everything In Its Right Place[/li][li]Kid A[/li][li]The National Anthem[/li][li]How to Disappear Completely[/li][li]Treefingers[/li][li]Optimistic[/li][li]In Limbo[/li][li]Idioteque[/li][li]Morning Bell[/li][li]Motion Picture Soundtrack[/li]
Apparently there will be an unlisted bonus track, too.
I’m not sure that I would count myself as a major fan (i.e I didn’t know they had a new album about to drop, and I haven’t heard any of the songs yet), but I do think that both The Bends and OK Computer are kickass albums.
When’s the new one set to drop? Anyone have a date?
so is the big tent a response to glastonbury (sp?) and 'how to disappear completely…"? this is great! i hope the tent can fit in my favorite venue (the electric factory in philly).
I’ve had the songs for a few weeks, thanks to the wonders of mp3s, but there’s still something special about marching into a store, picking up the CD, handing over my Visa CheckCard, and then walking out, struggling with the shrinkwrap, and putting the disc in to play.
Just as a heads up to anyone who bought the album and hasn’t already found this out. Remove the black tray that holds the cd. Viola! You now have found the secret second liner book!
Also, if you take any cd and run the sides perpendicularly to a sharp edged table, you can easily remove the plastic wrap. Do this on the sides where the plastic is folded and glued.
That’s what the review in my paper said too, Twisty. Good, but not as good as OK Computer.
FWIW, I loved most of the stuff from OK Computer. Still, it’s the sort of CD that ends up forgotten for some reason. All my friends have this too. They all say “OK Computer? GREAT album. Haven’t played it in years though”.
Weird. I’m gonna see what Nap… the recordstore has to offer and downl… proof-listen the new CD
I don’t have any of the other Radiohead albums (because I am a poor teenager without a job) but I bought Kid A the first day it came out and have been listening to it constantly ever since. I love the whole album but my favorite song is The National Album. Also, there’s a pretty good interview with Radiohead in Spin magazine if any of ya’ll care to go read that.
Ah, the delights of seeing a Radiohead-related thread on the SDMB.
I am a Radiohead obsessive and have been anticipating this album since OK Computer came out. I reviewed it for my college newspaper (my first byline in more than a year. that’s what you sacrifice to be an editor).
I must say, I love it. However, it’s not as good as OK Computer or The Bends. “Everything In Its Right Place,” “How to Disappear Completely,” “Optimistic,” and “Motion Picture Soundtrack” are my personal favorites so far, but every song except the title track is highly listenable.
I hear their next album is coming out spring 2001 and will be more like The Bends, i.e. an actual rock record. The thought of this makes me salivate.
As for Kid A, its lets Radiohead do some experimentation. They’re Radiohead. They can do that.
This one kinda threw me for a loop as I was expecting a harder edge. But if you look at the musical progression from Pablo Honey to here it seems consistent. Took a couple o’ listens before I got into it. It really seems to demand attention and I can’t seem to use it for background music, it just pulls you in. Also depresses the hell outta me. Some reviewer called it the “The Wall” of the new millennium or some such thing.
NME had a review (I think you can find it online) where they proposed that the album is part of the death knell for rock’n’roll, and music is heading in the direction of electronica.
I’ve always had a fondness for crossing the ambient type stuff with more conventional rock, that’s part of why I was obsessed with OKC. I think this one’s really gonna grow on me (not to mention influence my own musical noodling).
