She’s not Catholic, IIRC. Most Protestant churches do not consider divorce and remarriage to be sinful. I’m not entirely sure how the more conservative Protestant churches get to that belief, but they do.
By ignoring the relevant Scripture.
This illustrates a fundamental divide in how people see the world.
For many of us, global warming is not a moral issue. We’re not saying global warming is immoral. We’re not saying global warming is moral. Global warming is not an issue that exists in those terms. It’s like arguing about what color global warming is.
But for some people, everything is religion. So everything is a matter of faith and everything has a moral dimension. And they feel it’s sensible to argue about whether or not we should “believe” in global warming and whether evolution is moral or immoral.
If there is a pattern here, it is that Davis wishes to pee in the soup, so to speak; she is going to screw with gay people wanting to get married in her territory.
At first, I believed that she was simply standing up for her beliefs. Now, I suspect, she has some sort of ulterior motive – perhaps she wants to become a martyr, or more likely, a sort of latter day Sarah Palin, a public figure who gets paid to do … um… conservative and/or Christian stuff. On TV. For some reason.
Crotalus, the ELCA is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, but don’t let that word scare you. It’s used in the original “spreading the Word” sense, not the hijacked “spreading the hate” sense, and Blue Blistering Barnacle and ISiddiqui just did 23 years’ worth of typical ELCA evangelizing. (My pastor once quoted a statistic that the typical ELCA member invites someone else to their church once every 23 years. He may have [del]made it up[/del] used it in the same sense of “truth” as the parables of Jesus, but it sounds about right.)
My wife was raised Methodist and was looking for a church that was “full-Bible, but not nuts about it,” when our oldest dragged me to Sunday services because she needed a ride. I was a lapsed Catholic who lapsed when I felt the changes of my understanding of Vatican II got shoved aside, and the ELCA was where I had expected the RCC to go. I dragged Wife and a couple years later she was Property Commissioner and I was the Librarian.
The ELCA is one of the Hippy branches of American Christianity, with an emphasis on a liberal interpretation of the Bible, fellowship, good works, and food. My pastor got arrested twice in one week earlier this summer at protests, once at McDonald’s HQ and once somewhere else. He has a deal with his lawyer where he calls the night before a protest so the lawyer is handy with the bail money. Not all ELCA parishes consecrate same-sex marriages, but when our musical director married her now-wife Pastor was there to perform the ceremony. There are still some grumpy, old Norskies who grouse about such things, but a lot of the old Norskies are really old hippies and beats and they’re cool.
To give you an idea of a typical ELCA member, though, Rick Steves is about as ELCA as you can get.
Chillicothe has Calvary Lutheran Church. They seem more German, so the food will be better. The Church has made an effort to expand beyond its traditional Northern Europeans, though, and its inclusivity is growing by leaps and bounds. And it’s attracting young people, too. It does my heart good to see so many young families I don’t recognize, and young couples Wife taught in Sunday School.
