Kindle users - do you do the family sharing thing?

I would like to buy Kindle books for my granddaughter. She does not have a Kindle, but I know you can download the app and read on any device.

I’ve set up a Family Library, and added her as a child. I’ve put some books in there for her.

Now what? I know she needs to download the app on her iPad. (I am an Android user.) Then how does she access my account? Does it ask her when she downloads the app? She is spending the night this Saturday (she doesn’t live with me) and I’d like to set it up then.

Thanks for your help! Please don’t just add links without explanation. I would like personal experiences, thanks.

My gf and I have a shared kindle library. When either of us searches, we see results including the others’ library. It works seamlessly. Once she downloads the app and enters her info, your stuff will show up.

There are two options, as I understand.

There’s the shared kindle library between adults in a household (my husband and I have this; I suspect that kayaker and his gf do the same) - anything I buy, he can see and vice versa.

Then there’s adding a teen / child as a household member.

Amazon Sign-In - I know that’s a link, but I haven’t followed the steps to add a child. It won’t let me add an adult since my husband is already listed. If you try this, make sure you don’t also let her make purchases with your account! Not sure how to restrict that, or whether it’s automatically disabled.

You can also explicitly share books one a one-off basis with anyone. You can do that from “manage your content and devices” - you click on the little three-dot button next to the title, and select “loan”.

Anyway - I’d suggest you and your niece sit down together and give it all a try; I suspect it’s pretty straightforward. What I don’t know is whether you can restrict which titles she has access to - there might be stuff you don’t want her reading.

She will need her own Amazon account, if she doesn’t already. My understanding is that she’ll log into the app with her own info, since you’ll be sharing with that account. Unless of course you want her to have full access - then you could log her Kindle app into your account (I don’t recommend that!).
