Many years ago, as a teenager, when I was visiting my redneck cousins in Johnson “City” Tennessee, we saw a minor league team play in Elizabethton. One young outfielder stuck in my memory for the exuberance he showed on the field, and his excellence on both offense and defense. I was not at all surprised to see him lead two teams to the world series a few years later and win both of them. He just had that magic about him that only a few athletes have.
So I feel a little misty to learn that he’s now in the hospital. I know he had some bad press recently, but I think he’s a good man. I hope he pulls through.
