Humans are a social species, which has evolved an order in which they are interdependent for the survival of both the individuals and the species. There is no such survival value in saving members of non-human species, unless the individual saved is of some value to the humans tho save it.
Pursuing your own scenario, what was the “point” of sending those humans into battle in the first place, and inflicting disabling blows on them once they got there? Those in battle are not koalas accidentally struck down as collateral damage to human commerce, they were deliberately sent into harm’s way and then deliberately harmed. So however you choose to look at it, the circumstances are not at all congruent.
