If I were single I would SO do this.
Unfortunately the wife will never go for it.
I have two jennair dishwashers in my current house and it is so handy that you wonder what you did without them. It’s a kosher type kitchen so it has 3 ovens too. The jennair oven, stove and dishwasher is great but the fridge is leaking water so I wouldn’t recommend it.
Keep in mind that there are two 400-pound gorillas and one 800-pound gorilla in the appliance business. Electrolux, GE and Whirlpool make about 95% of everything.
Electrolux brands:
Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, O’Keefe & Merritt, Tappan, White-Westinghouse
GE brands:
Profile, Monogram, Hotpoint
Whirlpool brands:
Amana, Maytag, Admiral, Jenn-Air, Magic Chef, Neptune, Norge, Estate, Crosley, IKEA, KitchenAid, Kirkland, Roper, Speed Queen, Sub-Zero (dishwashers), Viking
For the moment, LG, Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, Miele and Sub-Zero/Wolf are independent companies.
Kenmore appliances are a mixed bag - they put thigs out to bid and whoever says they can make say, 100,000 dishwashers with a given feature set at a given price point gets the job. Almost all Kenmore appliances are being made by Whirlpool and Electrolux now.
And if it matters, Electrolux (a Swedish company) has moved most of its major appliance manufacturing to Mexico. If rumors I hear are true (from disgruntled former employees at the plant near me), they’re having major quality issues.
I don’t know where the GE and Whirlpool plants are located. Maybe they’re in Mexico too.
This is what I came in to say. I grew up with one of these at my Dad’s house, and now I have my own (in fact, I believe that linked one is the model I have). They’re built like tanks and work amazingly well. The bowl-lift models are a bit more expensive than the kind where the head pivots up and down, but they mean that you can do things that require an ice bath.
Thanks for the info and suggestions, all. Right now I am leaning toward a suite of major appliances by KitchenAid, mostly because they seem to offer the combination of features that works best for my cooking and my kitchen. These are appliances at the high end of the KitchenAid price range, competitive with the GE Profile and Cafe lines. I am planning to call my trusty, friendly, honest neighborhood appliance repair guy for his estimation of KitchenAid and other brands; I’ll report back to this thread for anyone else who may be following.
