I recently got a quote for a new kitchen. While the cabinetry and the countertop prices were in line with what I anticipated, the the price of the labouir to install it was about five times more than I expected. I don’t have alot of experience with this sort of thing, so I’m not sure if I was delusional or if they are.
How much would you expect to pay for kitchen installation for a fairly basic kitchen? A dollar amount per linear foot would probably be the best way to compare apples to apples. If there are professionals out there I would love to hear from you as well.
dont know much about dollar costs these days. But I can sure give you one piece of advice: whatever the estimate is for the time it will take–don’t believe it.
Your house will be in shambles for at least twice as long as he promises.
Even a small kitchen can cost upwards of $10,000 for a complete reno, if you include cabinets, flooring, countertops, sink, faucet and paint.
My step-father installs kitchen cabinets as a sideline (he is a master finishing carpenter) and charges $25.00/hour low-end. Of course, it depends on the area where you live, but I hope that helps a bit.
Yeah that seems about right. The quote I got was for $3100.00 Cdn. for approximately 20 linear feet, including crown molding installation, moving the sink (approx two feet), and faux cabinet installation. That works out to about $150.00 per linear foot!
Ours is 9 x 14 and we remodeled around 12 years ago. We paid $5000 for ceramic floor, new cabinets, countertops, sink, and dishwasher. We added three cabinets where there were none before.
Was that including installation? They want $3100.00 just for the installation! The cabinetry and counter top is another $8600.00. And then you have to add tax onto that, another 14%.
Where are you? Dad works in Southern Alberta.
That was including labor. But like I said, quite a while ago. Have you shopped around? Someone may be able to do it cheaper than the guy who quoted you. Also, we went with discontinued tile, which saved us a bundle. We also went with formica countertops rather than putting “million dollar” granite in our extremely casual house. It would look silly to have really high end stuff in a turn-of-the-century farmhouse.
That strikes me as being very inexpensive for 20 feet of kitchen.
Moving sinks isn’t cheap.
Crown moulding isn’t cheap
I paid about 12K in 1994 for a 17’ corridor kitchen about 29’ of cabinet total. But I did most of the work myself, had a contractor buddy that helped me with the hard stuff, low end cabinets, formica tops, pergo floor (self installed).
If I paid a contractor my buddy told me at the time my kitchen would have been 30K+
I paid $4300 USD just to have the plumbing moved and have a tub installed in my bathroom, a tub we already had purchased. It would be another $500 to install the toilet and sink (but we’ll do it ourselves), and we still have to do all the tiling, painting, and electrical ourselves. So that price doesn’t seem too bad for that size.
