Knowledge that could drive people insane--possible? Real (or fictional) examples?

Thanks, yeh, I picked it when I was knee-deep in graphic design and pre-press. I used to work at a pre-press service bureau that had dye-sublimation printers, as well as run laser exposed cmyk separations to films for press plates (then later, direct to plate). I like it too, since it has my initials in it, and the word “my” in between.

Nice story with the “magenta” blood. That concentrated dye is a reallllly deep red, so I can understand the confusion. I’m no stranger to graphic-arts related accidents myself, what with all the #11 Xacto blades in use.

But now, I should really change my username to rgb.

Is there a third option, where instead of living through thirty-plus years of ever-increasingly-outweighed unhappiness you simply commit suicide?

See above.

For what it’s worth, what made that event stick with me is that I was the only one in the room who didn’t vote “yes” in that show of hands; the gloomy philosophy majors had, well, a gloomy philosophy, I guess.

I have now reigned above fifty years in victory and peace, beloved by my subjects, dreaded by my enemies, and respected by my allies. Riches and honors, power and pleasure, have waited on my call, nor does any earthly blessing appear to be wanting for my felicity. In this situation, I have diligently numbered the days of pure and genuine happiness which have fallen to my lot: they amount to fourteen. O man, place not thy confidence in this present world!

The thought that the entire universe might be a simulation run on some unknowable computer, that we are in the matrix, it is a common theme expressed in schizophrenia.

I learned a term for that on this board, Cartesian doubt. What if everything we know is just the dream of a butterfly? Can you prove it isn’t?

My way of dealing with it is…who gives a shit? Ok so all reality is a computer simulation, so what? Does that change any aspect of your life? We are in a game run for unknown purposes, well just live your life as if it was real. Shrug.

I’d like to counter your assertion with Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.

Alvin Toffler coined the term “future shock” in 1970. Basically describing a state of extreme psychological stress and uncertainty caused by rapid societal change.

Sounds like pretentious nonsense to me. Although I imagine life would be very unhappy for someone graduating with massive student loans and have nothing to fall back on but a psychology degree.
