Favorite Qoutes

Please share with me some of your favorite qoutes. Please include the author and where or when it was written if at all possible.

One of my all time favorites was by the great Dr. Carl Sagan. Im not 100% sure where I read it.

“A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism.”

Another:

“For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.”

Edit: I forgot one. “We are a way for the cosmos to know itself”

“Life is like a sewer: What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.”

– Tom Lehrer

“A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.”
Benjamin Franklin

I thought that was from Hen3ry.

“Anyone can say he’s a writer. When someone else says you’re a writer, then you’re a writer.” (Andy Griffith in Hearts of the West)

“And East is East and West is West and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste more like prunes that rhubarb does.” – G. Marx.

“Thank God. I’m tired of being the funniest person in the room.”
The last words of Del Close.

Thomas Jefferson. The more I learn of him the more I admire him.

"As our enemies have found we can reason like men, so now let us show them we can fight like men also. "

Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.

"“My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

“What is reality, but a collective hunch”.

Lily Tomlin, in her one-woman show, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991)

Ooh! I like that one!

Just a few of my favorites;

“Civilization will not attain perfection until the last stone from the last church falls on the last priest.” - Émile Zola

“Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.” - Diderot

“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of Human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.” - William Pitt

and

“Fresh meat is stored primarily in a self-propelled biounit known as a pig.” - Cecil Adams

Epic!!!

Don’t say another Goddamn word. Up until now, I’ve been polite. If you say anything else - word one - I will kill myself. And when my tainted spirit finds its destination, I will topple the master of that dark place. From my black throne, I will lash together a machine of bone and blood, and fueled by my hatred for you this fear engine will bore a hole between this world and that one. When it begins, you will hear the sound of children screaming - as though from a great distance. A smoking orb of nothing will grow above your bed, and from it will emerge a thousand starving crows. As I slip through the widening maw in my new form, you will catch only a glimpse of my radiance before you are incinerated. Then, as tears of bubbling pitch stream down my face, my dark work will begin. I will open one of my six mouths, and I will sing the song that ends the Earth.

“Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those whom we cannot resemble.” - Samuel Johnson

"One of the deepest and strangest of all human moods is the mood which will suddenly strike us perhaps in a garden at night, or deep in sloping meadows, the feeling that every flower and leaf has just uttered something stupendously direct and important, and that we have by a prodigy of imbecility not heard or understood it. There is a certain poetic value, and that a genuine one, in this sense of having missed the full meaning of things. There is beauty, not only in wisdom, but in this dazed and dramatic ignorance. " - G. K. Chesterton

"He wore the unmistakable look of a man about to be present at a row between women, and only a wet cat in a strange backyard bears itself with less jauntiness than a man faced by such a prospect. " - P. G. Wodehouse
