Kodak vs. Fuji

There’s a GD thread that mentioned Kodak film is made in China (in the observation of the OP who was shopping for film) and Fuji film is made in Japan. That got me to thinking: Which do you prefer; Kodak or Fuji?

I like Fuji because I think the colours are more vibrant. Just better saturation, IMO. Fuji seems especially better when I use 16mm movie film.

[sub]Note: I use Kodak for B&W.[/sub]

Fuji.

Love Agfa, too.

Still use some Kodak for specific needs, tho.

Way back when, when photography (film, not digital) was a more important part of my job, I found that Fuji had better red tones, and was better for shooting people. Kodak had better blue tones, and was better for shooting outdoor scenery.

Things may have changed, but i still hang on to that distinction.

Kodak’s Vericolor (colour negative) was what I preferred for portraits. It wasn’t as color saturated as the consumer films. K25 for my still lifes and important exterior locations.

Ektachrome64 for most everything else. Until I found the Fuji and Agfa genies. Then, I started using their pro stock films.

When I finally broke down and bought a P&S, I always loaded up with consumer version Fujicolor 400. A great film.

Um, hijack, maybe I’ll start a GQ later, but does anyone know of Photoshop Elements plug ins for mimicking colour biases of older films?

We shot Cut Up on Fuji 125T. The opening scene takes place on the levee by the Huey P. Long Bridge. The Fuji film delivered wonderful greens in that verdant location. You really can’t tell the film was shot in 16mm. It looks like 35mm.

Based on the Fuji movie film, and Fuji slide film I shot in 1982, I’ll only use Fuji for colour stills in my 35mm cameras.

I saw an interesting article on film and whose was better. They tested Kodak, Fuji, and Walgreen’s brand (which is the biggest seller). They used professional photographers in all kinds of settings, and blind tested them.

The chose Walgreen’s far and away above over the others.

I found that interesting.

I’ve been playing around with different films for my portrait work.

I do like the Fuji 160 and Kodak Portra 160 but I don’t have a fav yet. I really should try the Agfa stuff sometime.

I’ve been using Kodak 400 TMax for B&W but I recently tried the Kodak CN and I liked that better. The blacks just seemd richer and smoother.

That’s cuz it’s Agfa.

I’ve been a Fuji man for years. Kodacolor is too orange.

Can’t beat Kodak for fleshtones. Royal Gold 25 print film was unbeatable for portraitures, but the bastards stopped making it, and now it’s even impossible to find Royal Gold 100 anymore.

Fuji Velvia is still the best for lush green landscapes.

Nothing beats Fuji for color reversals.

For black and white I use Kodak. Mostly T-Max 100. It’s impossible to screw up.

For printing I generally use Ilford paper, though I’ve only ever done B&W printing. I really want to try Ilfochrome (a.k.a. Cibachrome) printing, but none of the darkroom rental places that I know of support it.

Fujichrome Velvia. Love the vibrant, saturated colours it provides for subjects like landscapes.

Kodachrome 64 – colour separation.

Fuji Superia for colour, Ilford for B&W.
