O yes, the UN has an exemplary record of correcting its abuses and investigating its scandals. <chortle> Forgive me if I remain skeptical. By the way, in addition to the raping, UN peacekeepers are apparently not above doing a bit of drug smuggling, as well.
You are apparently a foreigner. I politely invite you to buzz off. I do not give a fat rat’s ass what you think about me or my country. And I think I speak for plenty of my countrymen.
To Really Not All That Bright:
I am sure that Bill Clinton will be disappointed by the fact that he cannot be UN SG. Given his peculiar mindset, he would probably consider the position as being a step up from President of the US.
Here’s a full text version of this story. Please note that no UN peacekeeper is accused of rape here. Instead, they are accused of sleeping with local refugee girls–desperate, socially marginalized unwed mothers who sneak into the soldier’s quarters hoping to barter sex for a little food for their children.
Not cool. Not cool at all. But prostitution is not rape. You can call it abuse if you like, but frankly this group of horny soldiers looks like a Boy Scout troop compared to the Congolese militia and the families and neighbors of these women.
Do you not realize that Peace Women is a UN project?
You seem unable to reiterate what I’ve just said, did I touch a nerve?
Haha, Redfury is priceless.
But anyway, no am not happy ‘ragheads’ are dying, I admire the Iraqis perseverance during these difficult times, I hope they do the right thing and get the government they deserve which is of course representative Democracy.
What I don’t advocate is leaving them to clear out the shit themselves immediately, because ‘the war was wrong etc’ we’re there and we have a solemn obligation to help them through this difficult transistion, I mean, we did it for them, all we can do now is help them get what they deserve
For Fuck’s sake Americans. Stop hating the French. That’s our job. We’ve been doing it for a thousand years. We had a war with them that lasted over 100 years. You are amateurs when it comes to French-hating. Leave it to the big boys.
The sad thing is that you probably do. That is what scares us about your government and 59 million of it’s people most of all. Attitudes like yours are not a roadmap for peace. More like a roadmap for continued terorr, oppression and a general feeling that the world will go to shit until enough people can stand against you and shut you the fuck up.
You sure as hell don’t speak for me.
And, just in case you’re wondering: we’re part of the world
While I wouldn’t suggest we bow and scrape to the demands of the rest of the world, pretending, especially in an age of globalism and global interdependance, that we’re not part of the global community… well… let’s just say that there will be more UN security council votes, and unless we can get our act together, we’ll end up going it alone again, and again, and again.
Diplomacy is more than just a word, and no, it shouldn’t have the word cowboy in front of it.
Oh, and by the way… if we cared about how people felt about our country, and we cared about those people, maybe we could invest in our own security and help middle eastern people instead of creating yet another generation of young muslim males who will literally give their own lives to hurt America.
Your attitude has consequences.
Ryan_Liam: Patriotism is one thing, jingoism is quite another.
Keep in mind that the fact your nation is less patriotic now than it was at the height of the Empire is an improvement. Remember: patriotism was invented by the French.
Though we may poke fun at the French, not everything from France is bad nor do we wish the French ill in all their endeavors, you know. For instance, in the current unrest in (the?) Ivory Coast, I would hope that their troops remain safe.
Besides, patriotism comes to us from ancient Greece, via the Roman Empire.
