Kubrick's "The Shining" vs. TV Movie "The Shining"

bean_shadow: "You have to have both elements: the disingration of the family unit through the problems of alcoholism and abuse and the horror of the possessed hotel. Kubrick’s version had a bit of part A and a whole lot of part B. "

Compare with my words above. This is why the movie was a truly great film - two people can see it two different ways. Otoh, the TV movie sounds pretty one-dimensional (I haven’t seen it and can only comment on others’ comments).

Well. I liked both versions - sort of like different recipies for apple pie. Maybe apples to apple pie might be a better comparison for either movie to the book - there was simply so much more in the written version, both movies will suffer in comparison. Rebeccca DeMorney was much more like Wendy in the book, but Shelly Duvall just plain fantastic. Weber was better as the nice guy going nuts, Nicholson was better as a nut trying to stay a nice guy.

Kinsey, I have been to Estes Park and the Overlook on Mt Hood in Oregon. I thought the Overlook was the inspiration. Does anyone know if either hotel was used as a location? Or did they use the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego as a stand in?

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park was the inspiration, and was the location for the TV-movie version.

I don’t know where the Kubrick version was filmed.

Also, remember he says later,“I felt like I’d been here before. Like I knew what was around every corner.” Perhaps the hotel was getting at him right from the start. He didn’t seem that crazy when he talked to Wendy on the phone telling her he was going to be late.
