I don’t know how many of you will care about this radio station in particular, so maybe this thread can turn into something about the death of FM radio in general.
Indy actually went off the air on Friday, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to post about it until today. I really miss Indy, even though they had started to water themselves down in the last 6 months or so they still played consistantly better music than anyone else in this city. They played bands that would later become (relatively) huge, like MGMT or Art Brut long before anyone else started playing thier music. They had programing where the DJ’s actually got to play whatever they wanted and the station would sound different depending on when you would listen to it. They exposed me to more great music, both new and old, than I care to admit.
I listen to them at work online, but I really miss them during my drive.
You can check them out on the net if you are interested. But I think I would rather link to this LA times article written by one of the DJ’s who’s show got canceld as the station started to go down the tubes.
ETA:
CRAP this posted before I was ready and I didn’t get to write a whole title! Can a mod help me out?
I feel your pain. I never listened to the station myself, but I remember what it felt like when the only decent station in LA (KMET) vanished to be replaced by The Wave.
KMET was legendary, and only just a little bit before my time. But legendary enough that I know the call letters, I didn’t realize that it was replaced by The Wave. That really sucks.
The thing is, I really would like some good radio to listen to. I have my iPod, and I can put it on shuffle, but it isn’t really the same as a radio station because it is limited by what I already know. There isn’t a whole lot of music on my iPod that I am not very familiar with. Satelite radio doesn’t seem to be a whole lot better, though I have only listened to other people’s satelite radio. Maybe the internet really is the last bastion of music.
What? This and 93.9 are the only music stations I listen to with any keen sense of interest. My other programmed stations are the 2 NPRs, Classical and I think 100.3.
This is the third time that my favorite radio station has been replaced by a Spanish language station (101.9, and another one that I no longer remember the name of). I’m still in the denial phase of my grief, shortly to be replaced by anger, I’m sure. Is there really no market for intelligent, non-commercial (or at least, less commercial) radio? I’m really stuck with Ryan Seacrest or Kevin & Bean, or Mark & Brian? Blech. At least this tempers my anger at the replacement of Joe Escalante!
100.3 does play a lot of classic rock but they’re not disinclined towards modern artists as long as they fit into the general sound. I hear(d) Michael Franti on both stations. It may also be the difference in DJs.
Man, this is like when it took until my last year of law school for WPGU to get good…and then I graduated in a year. Or when I came back from college and WFNX had decided to suck. Unfair!
