Labor Day holiday

Specifically are normal shops usually open (I’ll be in San Francisco) ? Is a Labor Day sale just for thatone day or for the week ?

THank you.

Most grocery and convenience stores will be open. Banks will be closed. Smaller Mom-and-Pop places might be closed if the family running them decides to go on holiday.

A Labor Day Sale is for one, maybe two days, depending on the store.

Basically, you’ll be able to buy what you want but don’t expect to get into the banks or anything government related.

The government/bank closures are only for the Monday which is Labor Day. Like said, small shops will probably be closed, but malls and touristy things will most likely be open to capitalize on your want to spend $$ and see the sights.

The huge Labor Day sales are usually held the weekend prior to the holiday and will typically end on Tues/Weds of the following week.

RSSchen - 35 minutes from San Fran on the Bay Bridge

Thanks a lot both. Even tho’ I thought we’d done enough trip preparation we’d somehow missed the fact Monday is a (sort of) holiday.

Dumb-ass Europeans :smack:

Most shops and restaurants will be open. BART will be running.

San Francisco in general, with the exception of the Financial District, isn’t too bad about closing down on Sundays or holidays.

There might be bigger crowds at some tourist attractions, since many Americans take their last vacation of the summer on Labor Day weekend.

You should know that the eastbound part of the Bay Bridge from San Francisco to Oakland will be closed this weekend for construction.[PDF]

If you are driving, remember that carpool lanes will be enforced at the usual weekday times, even though it is a holiday. Also, the police will be out in force looking for drunk drivers.

Don’t feel too bad- we only figured out that Monday was a Bank Holiday (whatever that is) when we had trouble finding a hotel room in Stockholm.

Don’t forget that the east bound lanes of the bay bridge will be closed Labor Day Weekend. If you are flying into Oakland that may cause a hassle.

I don’t know what RSSchen is trying to say they huge Labor Day sales take place on Labor day weekend. They may start before the weekend but they are definitely going on during the weekend. The Macy’s Labor day sale for instance is on now and goes through Monday. The only things that close on Labor day are Banks and non consumer oriented businesses. There may be the odd small shop not open but virtually every thing a tourist is likely to want to see will be open.
