Lack of Car chases in books

It just wouldn’t work would it.

‘The man looked in his mirror, the car was still behind. The man behind tried to go faster, but another car got in his way, he had to skid around it. Meanwhile the car in front almost crashed, but didn’t and carried on. At that moment a jump appeared and both cars leapt through the air, landing, and continuing their chase’

See it just doesn’t work (that was my own attempt btw)

What other things from books just wouldn’t work in movies or vica versa, let me have your opinion. ;j

The aerial dogfight would be a bit hard to write, I suppose:

*As the Green Dragon pulled his Fokker Triplane into a high, outside inverted loop, he could hear the bullets whizzing by his head - bullets fired from the nose gun of the Brown Bomber’s Sopwith Camel. The Bomber easily pulled in to the same power climb as the Dragon and stayed on his tail, firing just short of his barrel melting. When the Dragon reached the apex of the loop, he suddnely broke left and executed an immelman trying to get out from under the Dragon’s withering gunfire… *

Yeah, it’d be better on film (or with a professional writer  )

Just another difference between movies and books. Most books don’t have exceptional high-octane action sequences; most movies don’t have the exceptional character development of books. Pikc your poison.

In a short story I wrote, I had a car chase, and re-reading it now, I’d have to say you’re right.

that was a good one about an aerial dog-fight, and btw could you please explain your quote

‘im the third one from the left’

because thats identical to a jokey insult we use for my brother when hes in school plays, and my dad always says ‘ah it says here your playing third man from left’ and my brother gets really annoyed because he’s actually playing a much bigger part.

and finally firebat, yeah you are right, but im looking more at the comical aspect of it, but i totally agree with you, although to be fair many films and books to sometimes manage to be able to the opposing things you mentioned, for example character devlopment i would say Goodfellas has a brilliant character and we are able to see him from adolesence to manhood and it works very well.

But keep your suggestions comming.

Homer J - I’ve been around here for a few months and posted 400 times now.

You’re the very first person to ask what my sig means.

You win the prize!!

woohoo, what do i win? the explanation?

I’ve read some well-written car chases and aerial dogfights in some Clive Cussler books.

As well-written as anything else of Cussler’s, that is.

It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but Diplomatic Act by William H. Keith, Jr. and Peter Jurasik (of Babylon 5) also contains a pretty good car chase scene, if I recall correctly. I’ll also second Clive Cussler’s.

Ahhh, THAT continues to be the enigma that is my sig…

noooooo… will the sig ever have meaning!?
