Ok, keep in mind while reading this that I AM DISGUSTED AT THE MAN THAT KILLED LACY PETERSON… but, what I was wondering was, why does/did her story get posted all over the news everywhere, I mean, I’m sorry to say, but things like this happen all the time, I know she started out as a missing person, and therefore it would go out on the news, but still, why was her story so special (aside from the fact that it started out as a missing person case) that it had to be posted in newspapers, on news stations, and the like, from December of last year?
I have wondered the same thing. So have thousands of others. The basic framework of the Peterson story is not, in itself, original. Guys like Scott Peterson have probably pulled off this exact same stunt without a problem, but in this case, Peterson himself seems like a “screw up” in general and made several blunders leading to the pinning of the crime and subsequent media circus.
Why is it news? I think it’s because this is one of the rare times that the man who offed his wife in favor of another woman (who’s a hag compared to Laci, IMO) messed up and brought it to the attention of the law.
Laci Peterson is “special” because she was beautiful, white, and apparently somewhat wealthy (or at least good solid middle class). Had she been none of these, we never would have heard her name.
Plus the pregnancy thing and disappearing near Christmsa probably added to the drama.
IMHO I think it is because her story went on America’s Most Wanted and they painted a good picture of a marriage gone bad. The public felt for this pregnant mother who went missing. The mistress that stepped forward (who claimed she didn’t know about the pregnant Mrs. Peterson"Then the leads poured in which added heightend awareness to her story.
Then Scott’s bizzare behavior brought attention to him which kept the story in the public eye. He sold her car and got himself a sporty truck. (Who would sell their spouses car while they are missing?) He was seen out golfing in a well to do place (Woulnd’t you be putting up a REWARD for your missing spouse?)I read that he was caught with dyed hair and a grown goatee, $10K dollars cash, his brothers passport and a written plan to flee to mexico.
The the second story hit the news about another pregnant woman missing and a possible satanic cult ritual. Again this kept the Peterson case in the public eye since it had some similarities.
This stuff happens everyday but I think America’s Most Wanted launched it to the public eye.
My vote is for “white, rich, pretty”.
Rich white girl gets killed, it’s news.
Poor black girl gets killed, it’s a statistic.
And yet she wasn’t rich.
She hit during a slow news time, and a time when we were “ready” for a new news story. Then once she was a big story, well, that cycle perpetuates itself.
It’s like how Tom Cruise has remained an American Movie Star for more than almost a decade without having a movie that was a success in America.
