Just wanted to pipe in and say that I think a necklace is a good gift, unless she’s already got one that she wears everyday.
I’m a diamond girl. For the past four years my husband has given me diamond jewelry. I got a necklace, 2 BEAUTIFUL bracelets, and this year diamond earrings. The year before that when we had our first christmas it was a gold necklace.
Anyway, I think that diamonds just match so many more things. A gold necklace with a pearl pendant might also be nice.
I would just worry about getting her emeralds because I’m afraid they won’t match the things she wears. Although if a guy got me emeralds and said “I thought these would match your eyes.” I would be VERY happy!!!
Diamonds don’t match anything except maybe white, they just don’t clash with anything. And they’re so cold and lacking in personality. Icky, icky, icky.
If the lady’s eyes are that vivid, just about anything will make them stand out, except possibly sapphires. The vivid blue tends to compete with rather than accentuating a deep green. I’d go for something in a color she wears a lot of, or maybe a colored pearl. Those tend to be distinctive but still neutral-colored enough to wear with just about anything.
I’d also take someone who knows her well (but can keep a secret) with me to shop. Oh, and you should probably stay away from rings, as those not only have to be sent out for sizing but can send a message you may not be meaning to send.
If you want to highlight her green eyes, get a gem that is not green. My not so good colour coodination says purple goes best with green. I think you should get something that she can wear on her clothing, like a lapel pin sort of jewelry.
Earrings are great, but ask the jeweler if they are nickel-free. A lot of women (especially those of us who got our ears pierced in cheapo mall stalls as teenagers) are allergic to nickel. Personally, I can’t even wear a watch (even one with a leather band) because the back of it gives me a rash on my wrist.
For all those recommending emeralds, I might point out that there’s the same problem with emeralds that there is with diamonds - most of them are soaked in ten times their weight in blood.
If I liked diamonds, I would only want to own one with the polar bear on the girdle - one that I am sure was not smuggled through to finance the nonsense going on in Africa. Similarly, I won’t own a Colombian emerald - too many people murdering each other for them, and I don’t like the relationship I’ve seen drawn between emeralds and money laundering for the cocaine cartels.
YMMV, and probably does.
Green garnets are gorgeous, and last I heard available from Russia. I’ve also seen some really nice peridot, and jade is almost always good. Not too exotic, either.
There ARE quality emeralds that will be coming available in the next couple of years that aren’t from Colombia - one of the local exploration companies found a site with chromium emeralds of amazing quality. They are still in the process of assessing the site for quantity and economic viability.
Silver and hematite, maybe? Black goes with everything…
Well, what ever you decide, make sure to wash the blood off first. Nothing a girl hates more then a christmas present soaked in blood!
I think that for a big five consultant career girl you can’t go wrong with a string of pearls. She can wear them to work everyday. They aren’t green though. I have seen some really nice pearl and jade necklaces but they wouldn’t match with everything. Of course I bet she probably wears a lot of black and gray. If that is the case then almost anything with color would work.
I asked the same question of the salesperson at the jeweler, and I ended up following her suggestion.
Tahitian pearl pendant on a silver chain in a white gold setting. The pearl (this one, anyway) was a blue-green color. Some of them give off a silvery sheen, but this one was flatter and mostly green. I really liked the look of it. Hope it goes over well!
