A discussion with a buddy of mine prompts this. As a car guy, you see ads like this all the time. I mentioned that never had I dated someone I’d feel comfortable saying “Sweetie, I’m selling my old car. Would you mind putting on a bikini and some high heels and posing for a couple of shots with it?” (Hell, I’m uncomfortable stating a sentence with “sweetie”). A buddy insists that most girls would be flattered and jump at the chance to treat their attractiveness as a commodity. Since I’ve always had a thing for brainy types, I figure the ladies of the SDMB would be of a similar mindset to those I’d be posing the question to IRL. What say you?
PS: the car’s a Camaro because I just knew there’d be an ad like this for a Camaro.
Much as I love Camaros, and would love to own another one, I would also rule out purchasing a car that used an ad like that. I would assume that the seller is a total tool, and move on to the next ad that seems to be actually focused on selling the actual CAR.
My BIL has framed pictures like these in a shrine to his previous Corvettes. When I asked him how he knew the girls in the pics, he shrugged and said “Oh, they’re just girls… I pay 'em to pose with my car.” His teenage niece overheard this and loudly interjected “Eeew, yuck!” Smart kid.
It would be a big “Hell No!” for my GF. And she’s hot.
When we were dating, my GF sent some pics of her’s (selfies) that showed off her body in a “See through” but not “See through” white garment in what I thought was a very tasteful, artful way.
Well, fast forward moths later, we were sitting with a group of friends, showing off pictures to each other on our phones. Afterwards, I suggested she should have shown those.* She asked me if I thought she was a slut.
“Nope, just beautiful.”
*There where pictures shared with the group that had other ladies showing off more than what the pictures where showing off that I suggested.
Was he talking about women who are being paid to serve as models, or women being asked to “treat their attractiveness as a commodity” without compensation? There are obviously many women willing to do the former, but “I’d like to treat you as a commodity, only without providing you with the one benefit that comes from being commodified” is a lousy deal.
There are presumably women who’d agree to serve as an unpaid bikini model for other reasons, like hoping that this would lead to professional modeling jobs, wanting to please a romantic partner, or just thinking it would be funny, but I can’t believe there are many who’d consider it flattering to be told essentially “Hey, I’d like to exploit you.”
I searched Camaro on eBay because that would get the fastest results, but if you swing by cardomain you’ll find people posing with most any vehicle. Hilariously, the guys try to look like thugs no matter what they drive, so if you want to know what you’d look like posing with a Leaf or Prius wearing a wife-beater, holding a 40, and flashing a made-up gang sign, Cardomain’s the place.
We were speaking specifically of girlfriends/wives/SOs.
As a longtime car buff, I’m familiar with the car show girls who wander the show offering to pose with cars they think are hot (and meet a single guy who has a bit of dough). And I can see girls wanting to do it for a living, as it can lead to a type of modeling career or acting.
