ZebraShaha does here something I see done quite often that pisses me the fuck off. Now, this isn’t a pitting of him/her, s/he is just a hapless bystander in my drive-by. This just happens to be a perfect illustration, and it’s on an uncontroversial subject and it didn’t actually piss me off.
After naive positivist scientism this is the thing that annoys the crap out of me most around these parts.
Basically ZebraShaha said his/her problem wasn’t with the uncanny valley but then went on to define the uncanny valley specifically as his/her problem with the Avatar trailer.
So sorry Zebra, I am not meaning to single you out but it’s just such a picture perfect illustration for what I am talking about. I’ve done it plenty of times so believe me I am not trying to say you are stupid or anything like that.
In a Cafe Society thread it’s no biggie, but God it gets under my fucking skin in Great Debates. Usually if I am flipping out, it’s over this, even more than naive positivist scientism which even though I hate it even more deeply I will try to debate it more calmly, unfortunately the two go together like peas in a pod.
Ok on a second reading s/he didn’t actually do what I accused him/her of doing, but I am going to run with it anyway hoping people understand what I mean by saying it’s not something and then going on to describe that particular thing.
I am sort of glad I FUBARed it because I felt sort of bad singling out ZebraShaSha like that.
You’re all over the map here. It’s a lame non-pitting of an uncontroversial issue which doesn’t piss you off and would have bothered you if it had been in a different forum.
If you’re saying that people take an argumentative stance by default without considering it, I think you’re full of shit. People are prone to see a discussion as a back and forth, so when one person says something, the natural reaction is do say the opposite, even if they feel the same way.
No I am specifically saying dismissing the word someone else is using, and then defining it.
Like, “No I don’t mean butter I mean churned dairy cream!”, “No I am not talking about a car, I am talking about a four wheeled automotive conveyance with an internal combustion engine.” That sort of thing.
I would say the misunderstanding is half you reading the post too fast and half my clumsy wording. I was dismissing part of Cisco’s point, but doing it in such a way as it might be misconstrued as a dismissing of Uncanny Valley.
Since this thread’s kind of derailed I’d like to add my biggest pet peeve and that’s people who type LOL. I actually feel physical revulsion when I see it. I think you should only be allowed to type it if you actually laughed out loud. Otherwise, it just looks lame.
Strangely, it doesn’t. Perhaps because it’s not used as often and when it is used it’s just at the end of a post and not peppered throughout a whole paragraph. This is the kind of thing I hate:

FTR, my second biggest pet peeve is when they do wash it, but with some substance that’s even more pungent. Doesn’t make much sense unless you know my #1 pet peeve, though.
