Lamn mower- side and rear discharge/chute are for different things?

After doing a little research, I’ve decided I’m probably going to buy the following lawnmower:

I called Lowe’s to ask if the bag comes with it, and I was told it does. The person I spoke to wasn’t knowledgeable enough to tell me much more than that.

Does the side discharge have a different purpose than the rear? Is one for lawn trimming and the other for mulching? Does the bag that comes with it used for both? If not, which is the bag that comes with it used for?

the rear discharge is used when you want to bag. the side discharge is used when you don’t want to bag. both discharges are blocked when you mulch.

It’s probably like my mower which has multiple options. There are blocks/covers that you can use to cover the rear and/or side discharge depending on what you want to do.

If you want to bag your clippings you block the side opening and attach the bag to the rear opening.

If you want to scatter your clippings you block the rear opening and open the side discharge.

If you want to mulch your clippings you block both the side and rear discharge openings.

Here’s the [.pdf"]owners manual](Troy-Bilt: Lawn Mowers, Snow Blowers, Tillers and More[1). On mowers like this you either use the side discharge, or rear bagger, or neither for mulching. There’s a mulching attachment that blocks the side discharge for rear bagging or mulching. There’s a flap over the rear discharge to block that for mulching.

Why would someone want to discharge the clippings? For really high grass that would be challenging to mulch?

Thanks guys.

Just so you’re clear. The side is for discharge. The rear is for bagging. And neither is used for mulching. I’m not sure that this had been articulated clearly yet.

Even the best mulching mowers seem to leave clumps of mulched grass. Side discharge spreads them more evenly.

What happens if you attach the rear bag AND open the side discharge?

It mostly goes out the side discharge. Some people do this because they’re too lazy to remove the rear bag.

My favorite way is to close the side chute and open the rear one, but don’t put the bag on.

Thanks! I’ll try that this weekend!

The side zone is for immediate loading and unloading of clippings only. There are no clippings in the rear zone.
