"Land of the free, and home of the....", say what now?

That is a question more appropriate for the OP.

Sorry, no cite-thingy to support the beliefs of “nearly all the Americans*** I know***”. The ones who tell me what they think.

At the time when Francis Scott Key wrote that lyric, universal health care, same-sex marriage, reliable abortion, and gun control didn’t exist anywhere. Islam was virtually unknown in America, and our immigration came exclusively from Western Europe. (Refugees, I don’t know about.)

Are you suggesting the America of 1814, or the entire world, was irredeemably marred by cowardice?

36 million new Americans who largely favour: universal healthcare, SSM, gun control, legal weed, the metric system, proportional voting, bilingualism, and spelling favour with a ‘u’?

I’m sure Republicans would love that.
You already tried that and lost in 1812, but then again who wouldn’t want more of us Canadians around eh? We’re kinda awesome. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ever since that fateful day, all ships’ libraries are required to carry a rhyming dictionary.

You really don’t understand. Really, you don’t. Stop thinking you do and actually listen to people who disagree with you. You might learn something.

But, lets look at your points.

As far as I know, very very few people are against everyone having access to health care. The issue isn’t whether people ought to have health care, the issue is who is responsible for providing and paying for the care.

Of course, this gets complicated. There are insurance issues, pricing issues, regulatory issues, development costs issues, coverage issues and rationing issues. All of these are complex and depending on how they are address, can cause serious issues down the road (See Greece* if you don’t believe me).

But of course, anyone who points out that these are actual problems are just full of fear.

Next, abortion. Like it or not, the philosophical questions about when life begins and when it is ok to terminate a pregnancy aren’t settled. You have your beliefs, others have different beliefs and at present there is no absolute answer to whose beliefs are correct. Note, I am agnostic on abortion and it is a very low priority issue in my mind.

I could go on, however I doubt it will matter. Assessing your beliefs in a rational light, checking your assumptions, listening to those who disagree with you, well, all those things require a bit of courage. Much easier to call anyone who doesn’t agree with you a coward and hide behind your self-righteous ignorance.

*Greek entitlements along with tax evasion ('cause we all know that government programs are free) and the housing debacle crippled Greece. The housing issue set it off but Greece would have gotten there sooner or later. A bummer of a fact, you actually have to produce what you consume. If not, at some point those who do produce what you consume will get tired of supporting you and then you are fucked.
