Laptop Battery Question

Awhile back, I asked about saving battery life in both my smartphone and laptop and got some good suggestions.

This question is about whether it would be better to totally REMOVE my battery from my laptop.

  1. I usually use my laptop at home at my desk only, so could have it plugged in without the battery installed.
  2. Would non-use of my battery extend the life of it, simply by putting it in the corner of my den in the dark?
  3. If so, should I let the battery usage go down to zero before storing it, or charge it up and then store it?

Most sources claim that you can charge/re-charge a battery about 300 times or so until it starts to wear out. I just sort of figured by not charging, re-charging, when I don’t really move my laptop that much, I would essentially have a “spare”, unused battery when I need to move my laptop elsewhere. A fallacy in my train of thought?

Here’s a link on maintaining battery health that might be useful to you.

ETA: I’ve read that you should keep the battery out of your laptop entirely if you’re running on AC power, but try to fully discharge and charge it back up at least once per month.

Sometimes months go by when I don’t use my MacBook. Your link says it should be stored at 40%, but when not in use it gradually loses its charge. How can I maintain a 40% charge while not using it?
