Laptop doesn't turn on 80% of the time. Tried a few things.

3 years ago, I got a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop.

Recently, it started having trouble turning on. By that mean that when I push the power button (from a completely off state), the keyboard light will come on, go off, and then about 80% of the time nothing will happen. If I do this a few times, sometimes it will boot into Windows and everything will be fine.

I have tried removing the battery completely and also the CMOS battery, and it seems like each of those resulted in one successful bootup afterward, but no more than that. Tried various combinations of batteries in/out and this still happens.

Once in Windows, everything seems to work fine. I just can’t get in most of the time. Recovery mode doesn’t work either (exhibits the same behavior when I try the recovery button). It doesn’t even get to the BIOS/EFI splash screen, just stays off.

Normally I’d consider myself pretty tech savvy but this has me completely stumped. Any ideas? The weirdest part is that it happened gradually, over a few weeks, of getting more and more unlikely to turn on. It’s not like one day it just stopped working altogether, but it gradually became more and more problematic.

It could be the switch itself? If you look on ebay, there has to be a reason why so many are always on offer. Just a guess, and if right, the cheapest solution. Not sure how to test for this except replacement, but it does seem to be a problem with power not arriving, intermittently. Of course, it could be something more serious.

Try changing hibernation settings. It might not be coming out of that properly.

Do you have a wireless mouse dongle plugged in? That caused my wife’s to do the same thing and it fixed it to pull it out.

Same with any dongle that has a disk in it. I had this problem with my dad’s Blackberry. Always had to unplug it, or it would spend hours checking to see if it could boot from it.
