laptop memory question

My daughter has a 1 1/2 year old IBM laptop. She told me the model number was 2375BU1, serial number 99p3221. I must have misheard, because I cannot find it by plugging either number into the ibm website. I want to buy her an additional 512 of RAM. She has an empty slot based on Belarc Advisor. Can anyone decipher how I screwed up the model number, or secondarily, what type of memory does it use (I would assume that all IBM notebooks of that age use the same memory) She is unreachable until she arrives for Christmas, and she wanted it as a Christmas present.

Googling the model gave this, which offered ā€œT40 2375ā€ as a more promising alternative.

Looking at the label on the Thinkpad that i’m writing this on jibes with how ** GorillaMan** has said it should be. The first set of digits 2375-BU1 is the model number, and thats what you will need to put into the IBM site. The serial number is typically not used for anything outside of warrenty, as its what identifies your specific machine, while the model number identifies all the machines that have the same intitial setup. IBM UK does indeed identify that machine as a Thinkpad T40. For some reason IBM US does not identify this machine. Go figure.
