Laptop not booting, help needed (With video!)

So, title says it all. I turn on my dell inspiron 1000 and it powers up, but then gives me a blue-ish screen that fades, then shows up again, then fades, ad infinitum. The computer worked fine yesterday and, to the best of my knowledge, hasn’t been through any particular trauma. I tried removing the battery, holding the power button down for 45 seconds, then re-inserting the battery (as per many help sites recommendations), but this changed nothing. The fan goes, and the attached video will show the lights as they go on (and off, and on again).

What do I do to remedy this situation?

ETA: The OS is Windows XP.

If you plug it into an external monitor, does that display something different?

It looks like the computer may still be booting. Do you have another computer? If so, are you able to connect to the computer (or at least ping it)?

I’m guessing that either you video card or system board is not working anymore.

seconding suggestion to try external monitor,

the flickering is from failure of
A: backlight
B: backlight inverter
C: bad power connection/wiring from motherboard to inverter

Since you seem to be getting no video even when screen lights up I am leaning toward C

The cables that provide power and video to the screen run through the hinge, after thousands of open and close cycles they sometimes get worn and or damaged.

If it works ok on external video, its not the motherboard, if it does not work on external monitor, probably is motherboard.

In the latter case the solution is here
