large dead maple tree-who "wood" want it?

I still cannot believe this tree did not survive the drought. It is taller than the house- 7 feet in circumference. There is one little limb with leaves on it, but 99.8% of the tree limbs are bare. The bark is falling off.

Wood a woodworker want the wood?

In my mind, I consider maple wood to be “fancier” than oak or pine. I would feel a little better it I knew the tree could have another use.

What do I Google to find the person who would want to have the tree?

Put it on Craigslist?

Exactly what I was going to say.

But honestly, if the wood is in good condition, a woodworker might actually want it if they have some way of milling it. The OP might be better off trying to find a place that has some way of dealing with it, or even calling a firewood place…and making sure they hire someone reputable to take it down.

When I had most of a large elm tree taken down, I was able to put it on a Freecycle and got several replies wanting it. A Scoutmaster wanted it for wood crafts for his boys. A bird owner wanted some branches for her birds (apparently, elm isn’t poisonous for birds). A couple of people wanted some firewood. Et cetera. Now, admittedly, this wood was already cut (and we’d paid a pretty penny to get it cut down, too), but I was surprised that a lot of people wanted what I considered trash. I’d only put it up on a whim. But yeah, you’d be surprised, and I also had some people who just came up to my door, knocked, and asked if they could have some. And some people didn’t bother to ask.

I’d suggest getting a professional to cut it down, though. You DON’T want amateurs cutting it down, as they might hurt themselves, or other people, or damage your vehicles or other property.

Oh, I’m definitely hiring a professional to take the tree down.

But I did not want the tree removal people to cut it into fire place wood if someone wanted the trunk intact.

The tree removal people might know someone. I’d definitely put an ad on craigslist, though. I’m sorry for the loss of your tree; I’d be sad, too.

If there’s a lumber mill near you they might want to buy it from you.

Someone like these folks: Thomas Saw Mill

I googled “family owned lumber mill Maryland”

The desirability of the wood will depend on what kind of maple it is, how long the bole is (the length of the trunk from the ground to the first branch point) and if it has any metal embedded in it. Sawyers tend to frown heavily at milling urban trees because they can be embedded with all sorts of nasty items that can destroy their blades.

Yes. It’s unlikely a mill will be interested in a tree that grew in a residential environment. There could be nails in it, even pieces of wire that would cost them more in down time and blade repair than the wood was worth. Also, there are a variety of maple types, and not all of them make useful lumber. So advertising on Craig’s list sounds like a good idea to find someone who might want the wood. Chances are it’s someone who wants to use it for firewood, but a woodworker may be interested.

Just a thought, but you could have a sculpture carved into the standing trunk.
