Largest distance between combatants in a war.

What is the largest distance between two warring countries in history. Outside of nominal declarations of war (Argentina v Japan for instance) , the one that comes to mind is a rather vicious affair between two groups of islands on the opposite ends of Eurasia back in 41-45.

Isn’t the difference between the UK and Argentina (Falklands) slightly longer than the distance between the UK and Japan?

IIRC London and Tokyo is something like 10-11,000 kms.

What is the distance between Wellington and Constantinople? That constituted an actual combat between the principals.

Paris - Saigon (11.000 km as the crow flies) miles is probably on the same scale as London - Tokyo. Of course, then we have to deal with London - Pretoria (9.000 km) - a shorter distance, but the war was fought with 19th century tech, so the supply lines were comparatively longer I suppose.

England to the Falklands is about 12,800 km, England to Japan is more like 9,300 km. Of course, the shortest route to Japan involves going over Scandinavia and then crossing Siberia, while the route to the Falklands is all ocean, so if you’re going for actual distance travelled, you might get different answers.

ETA: Germany to New Zealand is more like 18,000 km.

In terms of distance travelled the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese war has to be among the top contenders. The Baltic fleet departed St Petersburg a full nine months before engaging the enemy and had to sail around Africa since the battleships were unable to use the Suez canal, so this made for a journey of almost 30,000 km in total.

…and they got their asses kicked for the trouble.

British fought Maori in New Zealand from 1840’s to 1890s. NZ of course had local soldiers, but at least initially these were in short supply: colonialism still in its infancy and the european population was comparitively small. Regular reinforcements of British soldiers arrived in 1860’s IIRC. The two locations are almost antipodean.

Not before attacking a British fishing fleet and almost starting another war.

Bulgaria’s been at war with Fiji twice in the last 100 years.

Not sure if Fijians actually fought against Bulgarians, two Fijian battalions fought in the Pacific WWII

For what it’s worth, the distance from Kabul to the closest point in the continental U.S. is about 10,500 km. Barrow, Alaska is almost 3000 km closer, though.

Well, the US just bombed the moon.

I read that they originally found those craters while looking for hidden Soviet moon bases.

How much fun is it to have a reason to use the word “antipodean?”

If that counts (and it should, since there were British troops fighting Maori at least once that I know of), I think it’s probably the best we’ll find. England-New Zealand is something like 1000 klicks short of fully opposite. The only real objection I can see is that Britain was a bit of an empire at the time, so if you count colonial possessions, the distance is much shorter. Still, given where the troops came from, I’d give it a pass.
