Largest Law Enforcement Stand-Off

Watching the classic climax of The Blues Brothers a little bit ago, I saw a great many state and city police cars, helicopters, army Jeeps and even a tank (plus perhaps hundreds of men) assembled to arrest Jake & Elwood. Obviously overblown for comedic purposes but it made me wonder – What has been the largest law enforcement effort assembled in a chase or a stand-off? I know a cross country style man-hunt might involve all sorts of ‘behind the scenes’ desk operators and the like but I’m wondering about men and equipment actually at the scene when the big moment happens.

Waco?

The Anarchist attack in London, called the Siege Of Sydney Street?

There’s the North Hollywood Shootout, which, according to Wikipedia, “… highlighted the growing divergence between the means available to the police and the offensive and defensive technologies employed by criminals.” Approximately 370 LAPD officers were called to the scene.

But the Sidney Street Siege had 200+ Cops, & an unknown, but presumably large, number of Coldstream Guards.

Scots Guards!

The east side of Chicago?

I can’t find a number, but there must have been a ton of police at the MOVE Standoff in West Philly. There were 10,000 rounds fire and a bomb dropped!

The riots and shootings in 1970 at Kent State eventually involved nearly 1000 National Guardsmen.

I wonder if the 1800’s coal and labor strikes involved more.

Riots aren’t Standoffs.

Wasn’t arguing with you, Bosda–since the criteria for “the largest law-enforcement standoff” is somewhat fluid (largest amount of men? firepower? blood?), I was just offering another large standoff for consideration.

And Winston Churchill
