As an American of Italian, German and Irish descent who looks like, well , a white guy with some Italian in em, I certainly didn’t have to deal with the situation inthe OP while growing up. Back during the Desert Shield portion of the 1st Gulf War I was Stationed in Mainz Germany. We were on high alert against terrorism but we were not locked down on base. I was bar hopping with a buddy one night and we were taking a short cut between bars when a group of 10-12 young Turkish males came walking by in the opposite direction.(I assumed Turks due to the large Turkish population in the city). As we passed they pointed at us and started chanting “Saddam, Saddam, Saddam.” The chanting got louder and louder and they were also yelling at us in their own language.Seeing as how the odds really sucked we kept walking and thankfully they did too. Not a good feeling.
Fair enough. I tend to notice the overt skinhead types more because I’m more afraid of physical violence than ingrained prejudice. It’s definitely true that there are fewer minorities; Dad was one of only two members of Sherborne Golf Club who weren’t white, and the other guy was the other consultant on his ward at the hospital. There were exactly three minority students out of 160 at my prep school- 1 Nepalese guy, one (black) Brazilian guy who’d been adopted by an English family when he was three, and me. On the other hand, I never then or have never since had anyone look at me funny when I walked into a pub down there.
Anti-semitism isn’t really something I would have noticed; when I lived in Dorset, all I knew about Jews was that they didn’t get along well with Samaritans.
I have a cousin who is half jewish-half filipino, born in korea, and raised in england and south africa!
You got nothing on me. Try being a woman. And while you’re waiting for that sex change operation, imagine walking down the street with people yelling “Smile!” or “Nice legs!” just because you got boobs and blonde hair and aren’t a member of their tribe.
Bah! I’ve seen Hussein several times here in Dallas, even after our troops captured him in Iraq.
Happens all the time!
“Paki” is somewhat derogatory. Please don’t use it on the Boards.
Maybe thats because Italians are in fact half Arabs. In the course of history, the arabs have ruled the meditteranion regions for centuries. They sure loved all those nice white women.
My father’s ancestors had been Sicilians for I don’t know how many generations. My father does, indeed, look somewhat Arabic. Interestingly, HIS father had red hair and freckles. My father’s generation mostly married people who didn’t trace their roots to Sicily or even Italy. For instance, one of my uncles fell in love with a German woman when he was stationed in Germany, married her, and brought her back to the US. One of my aunts married a French Canadian. While I’m sure that my paternal grandparents would have enjoyed a Sicilian son or daughter inlaw, they were happy to accept the spouses that their kids chose.
Maybe because I wouldn’t want nice people like you dropping by and visiting me…?
The ironical thing is, my father is Sicilian as well, from countless generations. He was born in a town at the feet of Mt Etna called Paterno’. My mum, by the way, is from Calabria. That means that we have liters of Greek and Arabic blood. Don’t you remember your history lessons? All those invasions during the course of the centuries?
Blast, anyone who could get an army together tried to drop by. Remember the Norman Hauteville and the German Hohenstaufen, for example. Remember the centuries of Almohad suzerainty. Also remember the Greek colonies in pre-Roman times, but they were settlers and not just invaders… Anyway, there was such a big Greek population that Southern Italy was called Megale Hellas - Greater Greece - not out of any sense of superiority: it is similar to the usage of Great Britain and Less Britain (Brittany), and to Greater Armenia and Armenia Minor during the Middle Ages.
Wow, Lars, you seem to be handling it much better than I’d be able to. I’d probably be burning inside with fury for a week after an incident like that. I take things very personally, you see
I’m 3/4 Indian and 1/4 Spanish so I often get mistaken for a lot of other races, with Greek and Egyptian being the most popular.
I’ve never heard anybody call themselves an ‘anglo’. They’d just be laughed at.
You sure you’re not Spanish/Hispanic?
