Lassie Come Home

I’m almost afraid to put this out because I don’t want to have one of my cherished childhood beliefs destroyed (and at my age there are not too many cherished childhood beliefs left), but here goes:

A. Is there really any truth to the stories of pets left behind on one side of the country only to have them show up (tired, bedraggled, near lame, semi-conscious even) months later at their family’s new home hundreds or thousands of miles away? And if so–

B. How could they possibly do it?

This has been a really tough week at work and I’m hoping for some improbably wonderful truth instead of another dose of harsh reality. Anyone got some?

I have no idea how they do it, but there have been several reported instances of animals returning to their original homes.

My favorite (although I cannot prove that it’s true) is the story of the cat from Hell that was moved from Wisconsin to Texas, ran away from the family’s Texas home, and reappeared at it’s old Wisconsin home several months later. It immediately began terrorizing the new owners of the old home along with several neighbors as it demanded the right to live right there.

Happened to us. Through a set of inadvertent mishaps, our dog Sparky got left behind when we moved from Atlanta to Chicago. About four months later, there was a scratching at the back door… and there was a dog. It wasn’t Sparky, though, Sparky was brown with white spots and this dog was mostly black with longer hair.
